Nuclear Fusion vs Crazy Frog

According to that guy on TV last night (Horizon, BBC2 9pm), the good people of the UK last year spent £1,000,000,000 on downloading ring-tones.

The total GLOBAL expenditure on nuclear fusion research last year was less than that amount.

Fusion will solve the energy crisis basically overnight and we're too busy getting an overpriced MP3 that makes us look like a complete fool in public.

I don't live here any more.

Not guilty. I don't own, nor have I ever owned a mobile phone. They are the work of Satan.

I have a mobile phone, but I have never downloaded a ring tone in my life. The standard 'ring' is sufficient in getting my attention. I don't need to be serenaded or alternatively sweared at to persuade me to answer.

Mind you, when I showed up for an interview at JET I found out that the role did not, in fact, entail doing some plasma physics but rather involved crawling around the inside of a reactor in a protective suit (with a ventilation hose, a la biohazard suits!) scraping radioactive goo off the walls so that it could be disposed of. I would have done it for £1,000,000,000, but not much less.
I use VB 6, VB.Net 2003 and Office 2010

Excel Graphing | Excel Timer | Excel Tips and Tricks | Add controls in Office | Data tables in Excel | Gaussian random number distribution (VB6/VBA,VB.Net) | Coordinates, Vectors and 3D volumes

Re: Nuclear Fusion vs Crazy Frog

I wish I could buy a phone which made phone calls...I try to keep the current incarnation (of Satan) until I can no longer purchase replacement batteries.

(Whereupon I sprinkle the remains over my neighbors potted plants because he's a socialist enviro-hippie).

But considering the relative cost - peoples misplaced priorities (through ignorance, mostly) is why progress is not actually made. I blame the internet - not personally, of course. Many believe that the internet brings us information at our fingertips. It doesn't: it delivers convenient sound bytes (sic), neatly packaged to paint the world in an obvious black and white, and incredulously decry with a self imposed superiority that those who oppose The View are leftist/communist/right-wing Nazis/corporate suits/racist/fascist/traitor (choose your own choice of slur - the internet is full of them).

Indeed, 'reading it on the internet' is now the accepted method of education; where the 'blogosphere' is the new journalism; where facebook is considered social networking; where 'community content' is your best source of information because "it's community compiled!" (by the very same community that gets their education through the internet); where every retort for any argument is 'it's for the children'; where people cannot tell the difference between 100 million and 1 percent.

But yeah, Crazy Frog ringtone: that's cool.

I was looking to buy some generic radioactive goo for £900,000,000 per kilo, oh well I guess I'll take my custom elsewhere. You've priced yourself out of the market.
