    Registration

    Hello All,

I know I am a new guy to the forum, however, I plan to be very active. It is also because I am a new guy that I feel I should air my view on Registration.

It took me an hour to find on the internet what the question was on the No Spam Activiation. I look around the internet to find the answer. Would it be possible to help other people join the forums to change the question? Some other forums use "What is the name of the American president... Barack Obama."

This is just a thought because any longer and I may had not decided to sign up.

    Thank you,
    Spider.

    Re: Registration

At the very top of this page, there is a toolbar containing several links. The first reads "IT", the second reads "Developer", what does the third one say?

I have noticed in alot older threads dating back to December 2007 that this issue has been covered.

It was just a thought to be honest, now that I am at home I am able to see the tool bar.

    Yep, Manchester

    Now I'm confused.

What does seeing, or not seeing, a toolbar have to do with answering a question on the registration page?

Thats the question people get when trying to register on VBForums. They are asked what the 3rd item in the top menu is (which is of course "News").
Problem is though that the menu requires the user to have JavaScript activated in his browser, so users that doesnt have it activated are likely to get very very confused about this question.

    Re: Registration

if you are employing no type of content/script blocking, the toolbar shows up fine in IE 8, all versions of Firefox and all versions of Opera, as well as Safari. It's been tested in all of them. I have all three loaded, and tested them myself.

While I do agree it looks out of place and very 2002 it helps them bring in revenue as it helps promote other websites which drives more hits and more advertising income.

So to keep VBForums.com free; it's a little bit of a necessary evil.

To be honest, I don't notice it half the time; it's tiny and out of the way.

    Re: Registration

Since this happens often, can't we add something to the question to tell the user to turn of script/ad blocking software like NoScript or AdBlock Plus to see the images. I think that would help with some of the confusion we see with this.

    Re: Registration

That is a good suggestion, and has actually already been done - the same idea came up in a moderator discussion, so it was changed to this yesterday:
NOTE-enable JavaScript and disable all content blocking to answer the nospam question.

At the very top of this page, there is a toolbar containing several links. The first reads "IT", the second reads "Developer", what does the third one say?

I don't have any ad blocker, have scripting enabled, and am running IE7 and I do NOT see the toolbar. What might be the reason why? I even put vbforums.com in my trusted sites and still don't see any toolbar.

    Re: Registration

I just tested in IE7 (options are almost default, and only basic addons) and it shows perfectly for me.

To check if JavaScript is actually working, click on "Thread Tools" just above the first post in this thread - if JS is enabled a menu will appear, otherwise you will jump to the bottom of the page.

You should also check which addons are currently loaded via IE's Tools menu. I only have "Shockwave Flash" and two for Java.

    Re: Registration

I clicked on Thread Tools and I get the popup menu, so JavaScript is enabled.

    The currently loaded Addons are:

    {FB5F1910-F110-11D2-BB9E-00C04F795683}
    Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper
    Diagnose Connection Problems...
    DriveLetterAccess
    Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper
    Java(tm) Plug-In SSV Helper
    JQSIEStartDetectorImpl Class
    Research
    scriptproxy
    Shockwave Flash Object
    SingleInstanceClass
    Yahoo! Toolbar
    Yahoo! Toolbar Helper

I'm not sure what some of those are. The first one and the ones labeled "Diagnose Connection Problems..." and "Research" do not list any publisher or file and are of type Browser Extension.

Anything in there that might be causing me to not see the toolbar?

    Re: Registration

scriptproxy is an obvious suspect, and based on a quick web search I found that it is part of McAfee, and has this behaviour:
The McAfee ScriptScan component replaces the Windows Script Host component with its own proxy component. The McAfee ScriptScan proxy component (ScriptProxy.dll) scans JavaScript and Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VBScript) scripts. When a script is executed and passes through the scan as clean, the script is passed on to the appropriate Windows Script Host.
...so it could well be removing the script, but I have no idea why - McAfee's log files should tell you if it is happening (and if so, why).

Have you scrolled to the very top of the page? I'm using IE and the toolbar is visible.

    Edit:

If you are using McAfee trying uninstalling it and installing AVGFree or Avast! Hopefully, the toolbar will appear then.
