    The point is to keep the back wheels firmly pinned to the road so that all of the mammoth power of the 1.6litre Ford Escort can be harnessed for maximum acceleration out of corners.

    You seem to be mistaken, as that was an Escort RS Cosworth, producing 227 BHP as standard, tuned to well over 1000 bhp in some cases. It had a 2Litre turbocharged engine as standard. So yes, it does need the downforce
