Hm hm hm hm hm hm hm
Webdevelopment > desktop applications
PHP > ASP.NET
ASP.NET = VB.NET / C#.NET
VB.NET --> desktop applications.
desktop applications: housekitchengarden applications, small business, medium businesses, huge corporations.
size(corporation) ~ #$€£
size(corporation) ~ size(partners)
you = 1 --> you ~ housekitchengarden applications
advertisement + selling = online : ... paypal ?
---
And now in words
As much as I love developing desktop applications. Nobody can deny the emerging growth of the world of webbased applications and services. So there's certainly a bigger future there.
But as much as I love ASP.NET. The webdevelopment world is dominated by languages such as PHP, not ASP.NET. So, I wouldn't go into web development with VB.NET. I would indeed stick to desktop applications.
You've got all kind of desktop applications. Myself, I work (almost like freelance) for big companies such as Pepsi Coke, Icecream factories, ... creating warehouse management software. Now, those kind of companies would NEVER do business with small companies. Big companies do business with big partners. And of course the bigger the company the more money they spend on their applications. Big companies really don't mind spending 300 EUR/day for some external software engineer during some project.
I assume you are not part of some big company. I assume you are working alone? So, it would only make sense to conclude the chances are small you can develop for bigger companies. I think your best market is people like you and me.
I think if you can develop a small application that EVERYBODY could use for something, you could indeed be able to sell something. However small business = small prices. So you will have to sell at low prices. So ... you need a BIG audience.
I guess you would need to make it very easy to buy from you. I would set up a website, create a paypal account for it. I think you can earn a nice buck like that.
Well, that's just my opinion on it. Enjoy :-D

Re: Application for Business
I don't think the question is valid. What type of software is most profitable: One that everybody needs, and that only you can provide. If there is software that everybody wants, but that anybody can provide, then there is intense competition, and less profit. If it is software that only you can provide, but nobody needs it, then the profit will be little or none.
As for being easily sold, if people want it, then it can be easily sold.
Therefore, you have the problem that if you want to tackle a problem that lots of people have, then you will have lots of competition, and must be clearly superior for the software to be both profitable and easily sold (though the profitable part is not certain in this case). Alternatively, you can tackle a problem that is obscure, such that there is little or no competition, but it can only be easily sold if you can identify a client base, which may not be so easy.
Having said that, I believe there are actually thousands of small to mid-sized businesses out there who have crappy software because they are either unable to get anything better, don't know if there is anything better, or some similar issue. Inventory management software customized to specific niche businesses seems like a nearly endless mine, but whether that is a gold mine or a spam mine, I cannot say.
My usual boring signature: Nothing

Personally, I would just find one area of programing and stick to it. Say web design, create programs that would be used by people in that industry. Don't try and do a Microsoft and create programs for a wide range of areas, you'll only get yourself into trouble.
