Global Warming You Sed....
All this week, the temperature has been in the low 20's/Teens, and thanks to a nice arctic blast from the north, the "feels like" temp has been in the single digits. Today will be the first day (hopefully) that we actually have temperatures above freezing (32 F in the states).
Now don't get me wrong. This area of the country (lower midwest) is accustomed to snow/freezing temps/etc., but even people I've talked to that have been here for many years say it's unusually cold this year.
I'm not ready to jump to the side that says global warming is a lie, but what is the explanation for this weather? Do you realize it snowed in Louisiana (where I'm from originally) of all places? And not just the light mist I saw sometimes when I was a kid. We're talking about 8 inches of snow in a place where I wore shorts on Christmas day for most of my life.

It may not have a serious tag, but I'm asking a logical question Kas.
Like I said before, I am not saying Global Warming is a lie. In fact, I'm quite sure that humans are the most destructive creatures on the planet, but that's another topic entirely.
However, the developments in weather THAT I HAVE SEEN do not give me the impression of global warming. Maybe I don't truly understand the concept, but it was my thought that temperatures should be rising, not falling as they have been. Once again, this is just what I have personally noticed. Not sure what it's like in your particular area.

Re: Global Warming You Sed....
I really don't know. I have to look into the reports of the artic ice melting and such.
But maybe ... with the world economic downturn, especially in driving-obssessed America, the fact that peoplehave lost their jobs, and with oil both going sky high people started getting used to cutting back, then oil plummeting low (deflation) is a reflection of people having to keep cutting back due to lack of cash.
Also Beijing cut back on the number of cars on the road for the Olympics, and I think they have kept that policy because people loved the clear skies so much.
All that compounded might have reduced global warming, and put us back into a normal weather mode?

Re: Global Warming You Sed....
Global warming will not necessarily warm any one particular place. Some places may get FAR colder. For example, much of western Europe is warmed by the Gulf Stream, as parts of Alaska are warmed by the current off Japan. If those circulations changed, those regions would get considerably colder.
Furthermore, the discussion is only about moving the strange attractor. There will still be considerable fluctuation around that point, though.

Global warming theorists do not generally assert that everywhere in the planet will simultaneously rise in temperature, merely that the global average is on a gradual increase.
(Kasracer, the serious tag isn't a requirement for a discussion to be considered serious. You're all intelligent folks who can make that call yourselves...)

Global warming would in fact lead to dropping of temp in the Northern Hemisphere. Don't ask the science went over my head, we had this discussion at a dinner party over the weekend. Mind you probably a blessing given the rise in skin cancer rates Down Under.

I understand but global warming discussions typically get heated so I wanted to head it off at the pass.

It would have taken longer to type out that reply than to delete kasracer's stupid post. Why dig up boring old debates we've had 87 times this year alone?
