    A friend of a friend...

...is thinking about resigning from his job.

He doesn't really want to as such, it's just that the job he loved so much 2 years ago has degenerated into months of ceaseless, thankless, pointless toil with no sign of relent.

Obsolete programming tools, long-term unremedied design failures, catastrophic project hand-overs, meaningless and impenetrable task/implementation specs, nightmarish test/fix/document cycles...

He's worried that if he stays there much longer then his skills are going to atrophy away to nothing, leaving him unable to easily obtain alternative gainful employment. But seeking new employment in these troubled economic times also holds anonymous terrors.

    What should he do?

Man, I'm glad I'm not that jerk.

He should change his name to Aqualung (Re: Jethro Tull) and find a park bench to sleep on.

First look for another (better) job while still working where he is. Then kick his employer's *** when he has got one.

My friend's friend told me to make this a "[serious]" thread but I told that jerk to shove it.

    That'll learn him.

    Step 1: Freeze self
Step 2: Wake up in the year 3000 right when the whole world is about to come crashing down due to a software bug created in a programming language no longer understood (vb6).
    Step 3: Hold World hostage
    Step 4: Profit

Re: A friend of a friend...

Tell him to pull the trigger. I was in a very similar situation a year or so ago, old tools, refused to think bigger and move forward, skill set was becoming decrepit. So, I was able to find another job, interview and get hired all while working for my last employer. It was great telling them to kiss it.

The economy wasn't this bad then, so that's a consideration. But - bring that up in your interview and tell them you're apprehensive to make a move. Also, what happens if the company you work at now ends up cutting people? It's bad all over, unless you're current employer is recession proof, then there's risk
    there to.

My bottom line was my happiness, I'm not going to work somewhere that sucks and that's that.

By you, I mean your friend, of course.
    Here's to us!

Darned few, and they're all dead!

Find a new job first, then quit.

Unless you - er, your friend's friend lives with his parents, then I say quit and spend the rest of the winter months on their sofa eating bags of Chee-tohs and watching daytime TV.

Sadly he doesn't have the luxury of lounging around on familial furniture.

His tequila budget is virtually unlimited though, which is nice.

He should try spending 5 seconds in Chit Chat. That'll show 'em. Plus, we can taunt him relentlessly.

You just need to pass it to your friend so your friend could pass it to his/her friend.

I think the friend of a friend should remember two things:

    1. anyone who has a friend is blessed
    2. Doritos are far superior to Cheetos

May the SOAP be with you.
