Downloaded from App Store yesterday. It's like Windows Media Centre, but it actually works and doesn't keep disconnecting irreparably.

Also downloaded Bloomberg (nuff said), Shakespeare (nuff said) and Last fm (search for a musician and it generates a radio station out of similar artists, streamed over the interweb)

There's a lot of rubbish on the App Store, but lots of pretty good apps there too, many of which are free.
If only Apple would release a folder app to properly categorise all your icons, and allow you to customise the desktop properly, then I wouldn't have had to jailbreak mine.


No mactards here, but the iPhone is actually a pretty decent piece of kit.




Also, a question. Does anybody know of any way to get hotmail/livemail/msnmail over pop, or to forward mail from these to a non-MS account? I want to get it pushed without having to set up my own mailserver to do it.

I hate it. I bought an iPod Touch and actually began development on it but it sucks hard for developers. No background apps, no guarantees on approval (no approval? all your time is now wasted!), no undocumented API usage, little documented API with limited interfaces to other areas of the phone (you can't even get all of the user's settings). Don't even get me started on Objective-C....

As for the aspect of using it? Safari always crashes (many have this issue if you use it enough) and the other day I downloaded a program and while installing it crashed, went to a black screen, then came back and completely unorganized my 5 slides of icons. I gave up on it after that; no way am I redoing all of my previous organization.

Safari does crash a lot, especially if you visit a lot of cluttered sites.

Hotmail will only forward mail to hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com, or domains which are part of the "Windows Live Custom Domains" scheme. Since this scheme runs on the Hotmail backend I presume it provides no facility for direct POP or IMAP access.

I say 'direct', because there is this:

If I am not mistaken, the Live email services only allow POP3/SMTP connections for paying customers on their advanced email thingy.

I think the concept of allowing apps to run in the background is good, it would certainly make the device that much better, however this would increase the CPU load and that might slap the device right in the face.

Following a bit of investigation, it turns out that there is a Hotmail Plus account, costing £15 per year, which gives you POP access amongst other things. However, there don't seem to be any direct links to it on the Live website and there's no information about it whatsoever. It doesn't even tell you how long you are signing on for or how much notice you need to give to cancel.
Also, somebody has found a way to circumvent the block on forwarding by using the Mobile Messaging facility (then turning off txts), but I'm starting to have second thoughts about forwarding everything to my gmail account.
The only other alternative, which may have to do for now, is that there is in fact a hotmail app in the depths of the App Store, which you have to browse to as it doesn't show up under a search unless you know the exact name. It costs £6, but doesn't do push email.
