I have what I figured was a simple task, but I don't use photoshop ever, so it is proving to be difficult (for me).
I needed to make a dotted line. I figured that was simple enough, but no, it involves a several step "make a custom brush" process.
So ok, it wasn't all that difficult, and I figured that out.
However, what I want to do, is use the brush to create a rectangle. I can't figure out any way to do this. It seems to me brushes are only for use with the brush tool or pencil tool, and there is no way to say, apply the custom brush to the border of a rectangle.
Now a rectangle can have a "stroke" applied to it, giving it an outer border, but I can't pick my custom brush as the stroke style (im guessing because its a brush).
If I just make 4 straight lines using my brush, and make my own rectangle, it them becomes (from what I can tell) impossible to resize it as needed without distorting the actual brush dots.
So I guess the question is, how do I make a rectangle that is "dotted"
Yay, today I went to open my PSD file, only for adobe to tell me it can't open it because its not compatible with my version of Photoshop.
Really? The PSD file I created on that very computer somehow over the weekend decided to no longer be compatible on the same machine?
Then I do some research, and find that if your PSD files are on a network share, there is a good chance they will become corrupted.
Well thanks Adobe, for making software that can't edit a file on a network without chance of killing it, and giving 0 warning in your product, that it is likely to happen.
I would have made a backup copy somewhere else if it wasn't for the fact that the network storage is already redundant with RAID.

That's scary news. Thanks for sharing. I wonder how it works with external storage devices. I have stored my psd files on an external hard-disk. I have never bothered to check if they are good. This post made me think.

There were lots of posts where people were making suggestions like creating batch files to bring the files down local while you work on them, then another to copy them back to the network when you are done for the day.
For a product that costs so much, and has been around so long, i find this to be pretty silly.
I have no idea how a USB attached storage would be, but I would assume it is not the same as network, considering there is no TCP communication involved, its all over the system bus.
First off all, creating a dotted line is far easier in Illustrater as Photoshop.
You can alter the Stroke (look for the tab) and define the width, length of the line and the length of the whit space in Points so a line with a stroke width of 3 points, Line Length of 3 points and Gap of 3 points will be the kind of thing you are looking for.
But anyways...
You can EXPORT your photoshop to a previous version.
This was done in the Menu File -> Save as in earier versions, in CS1 it was placed under File -> Export and you could choose legacy versions.
Another far easier way is saving as a PDF file.

After finding out how to make a custom brush for a dotted line, it was no big deal. I just created a path, and then applied the brush to the path.
I know photoshop can do "everything" pretty much with regards to graphics, its just figuring out how that causes the problems. I am not, or don't intend on being a graphic designer.. I just need to know enough to get stuff done.
as far as exporting, how can I export a file that I can't open? My issue has nothing to do with versions.. I was trying to open a file in CS3 that was made not only in CS3, but on the exact same computer, 1 day before I couldn't open it anymore.
I am convinced that it is related to saving the file to a network, since there are lots of things around the web pointing to that as an issue.
