Bought it today. Had to go to two different places. For some reason Circuit City had some sort of shipping error and never got the PC version in. For those running Vista, the program requires a vista eperience index of 4.3 and recommends 4.8.
Basic information: The game is based on the same engine Oblivion is, but the environments are more varied than the Oblivion ones. The targeting system is a break from the standard real-time to let you target a specific part of the target. That can be used to disarm or hit sensitive areas. For example there is a creature that is a mutated crab that has one tiny vulnerable area: The face. I've spent a couple of hours playing the game so far, and some of the flaws of Oblivion still exist, such as a basically unplayable 3rd person view, and if anything the face creation is more limiting. But the release price is $10 LESS than the oblivion release, and the game came with a bottle opener! Collector's tins come with various things including a lunch box. I think we've got a winner here.

Is that a typo?
One of the things I dont like about Fallout is that its environments, when compared to Oblivions environments, is very dull. Of course, it is a wasteland from a nuclear war, there shouldnt be any flowers or beautiful trees, but its still a rather dull environment to walk through. Oblivion has more variation.

It came with a bottle opener???? What's the implication to that?
I have a friend who can ONLY play Oblivion in the 3rd person view. I guess it's possible for some to use it. I only use it when I get really good at acrobatics and want to jump over people in the streets.

It's apparent that you're not oblivious to his problems.
bobble head in collector's tin. It's there for a reason too. It has a live account and it tracks your achievements. One of them is the number of bobble-heads you find.
I haven't been brainwashed though and i won't be giving the game a 100% score. In my playtesting it suffers from another problem that no one seemed to mention in any reviews: Sometimes when you talk to people the game assumes you know something you haven't learned yet. Highlight to read a spoiler example between the lines:
---------------------------------------
there's an enclave of cannibals but the only way you can learn they are cannibals is the fact that they ate these people after killing them. The problem is if you don't have a high enough medical skill you can't even tell why they died, let alone that they were eaten. But when you go to the enclave, you somehow know they are cannibals anyway.

One of the issues that plagued both Morrowind and Oblivion were the high number of crashes in the initial releases. Patches fixed much of this, though Morrowind was always plagued with a few hideous design decisions that could only be fixed by mods.
The only thing that has happened to me sofar is that I fall through the ground once, when trying to jump up on a ledge. I havent been able to "replicate" it again though.
That happens in Oblivion, too. I've ended up in the walls of a house, and often knocked enemies into the walls. I spent a considerable amount of time running around trying to kill a spirit wolf that I had knocked into the floor. It kept lunging up and biting me, then disappearing back into the floor. I could only hit it when it lunged out of the floor at me, so it was a lengthy fight. I couldn't tell whether I had killed it or not until it finally stopped attacking me.

Maybe, at the end, it fell through the floor completely.
I just had a somewhat odd bug. I was walking along the wasteland when suddenly some large beast attacked me, which resulted in my early death
I decided to go back there to get my revenge but as I got closer to the place where I knew it was, i could see it getting launched straight up into the air, ti disappear into the coulds. Then it did it again, as if it got transported back to the ground. After about 3 of these quite remarkable "air-launches" it stopped. As I got to the place where the beast should've been, I heard "battle-music"...but there was no beast.

game is DANGEROUS. I wander a wasteland of ants and rats, walk around the backside of a semi trailer and a supermutant with a rocketlauncher is living in it. Sigh.

ok i also installed the game under the xp64 partition. NOW i'm getting crashes. In a two hour period, it locked up twice, both times indoors. First time i was pummeling one of the 'snakes with my fists as a 16 year old, the 2nd i just went into a bar in megaton while nearly dead (hearbeat sound playing). The sound never stopped but the actors froze up and stayed that way for about 10 seconds, then moved for a split second, then repeat. Eventually the game crashed.
I figured i'd try it out under xp. If anything (besides the above annoyances) it plays MUCH faster. I believe it has to do with using dx9 instead of 10 in xp. I even have my vid card a 20% OC in vista and not xp and it's still much faster.
I found a bobble-head in the game last night! Its my first one, they seem to be really hard to come by.
Me too! I found one in the medical office of vault 101. I've played through that area three times now and i swear it wasn't there before... Where did you find yours?
Maybe, at the end, it fell through the floor completely.
Whenever I got stuck in the wall I had to fall through the floor, at which point I would appear back outside the wall. In one case, though, I whacked a spirit wolf so hard that I think it showed up on the floor below me.
How long did it take you? Working all out, I would think that solving the Oblivion main quest would take DAYS! You seem to have gotten Fallout done much faster.

some people have claimed to have done it in hours but i am skeptical. I suppose with the proper character design it could be done. I wonder if the game suffers from the same uber-character loophole for rogues that Oblivion had? In oblivion if you had perfect stealth you could attack someone and they STILL wouldn't detect you. So every hit was 6x damage.
Experienced the bug again in where the game was freezing. I exited to windows and looked at the task manager and it was maxing out one of my cores. I wonder if this is some kind of problem with 64-bit OS running a 32-bit program? Can it properly multi-thread from inside an emulated environment (wow)? Or perhaps the game only uses one core?
Anyhow, I have posted a screen shot of my current character. I think it's hilarious and it's the stealthiest outfit i own. Kind of reminds me of the old commercials. Note the weapon of choice

It took me far to little time! I've been playing for about 30 hours, and that includes doing alot of other stuff not related to the main missions. I cant help but keep comparing this game to Oblivion, and that gives the game expectations to live up too, unfortunately IMO it doesnt. Now I know this game will be the next GTA4, in the sense that MY opinion is that it doesnt deserve superreviews with 10/10, but I'm sure thats what it'll be getting.
Fallout 3 seems to be more polished than Oblivion. I think they also got more than 4 voice actors for this game. The abysmally small number of voice actors in Oblivion was a really big problem for me.
There are certainly still typical Bethesda mistakes in Fallout 3 like the crappy animations.
My monkey wearing the fedora points and laughs at you.
Yeah the voice acting in Oblivion was a bit strange, but I still find Oblivion a much better game than Fallout 3.
it was also buggy. Talk to some of the bums around town. Sometimes there were different voices for different dialogue options.
and the perfect reviews are why i said i am not brainwashed. It HAS been getting perfect reviews by legitimate reviewers. Others have been trashing the game. One guy complained his immersion into the game and the believability was killed by the fact your skills are affected by what you are wearing. You can do better surgery with a doctor's outfit on, for example.
I've been playing it for about 10 hours and i am level 4. You must be rushing. Of course i've been doing a lot of searching and that takes a while (rogue)

After getting dissapointed about how short the main missions where, and now getting dissapointed over ANOTHER thing..along with some other general things that I find bad in comparison to Oblivion...
I'm actually going to say that this game failed. As much as I'd loved for it not to.

i'm kind of annoyed that the install program is buggy. Sure it's fine that you don't get a start menu entry for vista. There's a games folder for that. But it didn't create an entry in xp64 either! I had to manually locate the game and place a shortcut on my desktop for it.
Don't these "Live" games auto-update when there's a patch? Anyone?

latest update: i am level 13 now and i just found a major bug that would conceivably give me any level i want to have in the game. Go into any major population center such as megaton and drop a fatboy at their feet. You will die from the explosion as well but when the game auto-loads the last save, it gives you the xp for everyone else that died after it loads. All you have to do is save and do it again and again. Infinite levels.

Those beggars talk in more normal voices AFTER you've given them a handful of cash, it stands to reason that they wouldn't put on the "poor little beggar's hacking cough" after they've taken your cash, the sympathy card has already been played.
Oh and if you're annoyed about the fact that in Shivering Isles the "arrows of duplication" bug has been fixed, fear not, I found an equivalent hack that still works and is actually slightly simpler

I"m referring to when you ask them about rumors specifically or about the grey fox. They are almost always in the wrong voice. And this is without giving them money.
never found that bug. I did find a similar one in morrowind though. You kill this nutcase in an underground cave and she's got unlimited stunning arrows on her. You grab them and exit the search her and there is 30 more.
Anyone that doesn't believe that Oblivion is perfect is therefore a Necromancer and is therefore to be dealt a swift demise at the edge of my +12 Madness Axe.
