Sorry kasracer, the correct spelling of Humour is Humour.

The americans have the most attrocious spelling because a man called
Webster decided that normal spelling was to difficult for the poor benighted
Americans, so he published a dictionary in a series of editions, where he
gradually and stealthily change the spelling of various words.

Thing is who decides how things in the English language are spelt, us, the bloody English!

If the Americans decide to use our language use it as we intend! Or (with reference to OOP), you may have to extend it..

If it happens naturally then it would be evolution.

As it was imposed by one man it is the literary equivalent of GM agriculture.

But that's how linguistic evolution occurs. It's not something gradual, it's something that is used and that then catches on. If you compare Old and Middle English with English used today, a lot of the spelling and grammatical usage has changed to make it more efficient and in-line with modern views of phonetic symbolism in letters... which is what Webster and others may have done.

Similarly, there have been changes in recent times which have come to be acceptable as well; the most popular example is the usage of the split infinitive at the beginning of a sentence which was popularized by Star Trek.

It's only a few hundred years ago that English became more standardized so this was bound to occur at some point.

I do understand English humor. I watched Monty Python's Life of Brian. There was a spaceship in there, that was really funny. The aliens had weird faces. Ha ha.

so we got the latin rooted spellings, and you got the french rooted spellings. I think you are just jealous...

I also don't think webster was alone in thinking the u was totally useless in the words we have or and our spelling differences on. He might be credited with publishing the dictionary, but he certainly wasn't alone.

You live in Bristol and you say Taunton's bad for traffic, I was going up to ikea the other day, it took 3 weeks to get over the Avonmouth bridge...

Oh, sorry, 2 hours, I was converting to overinflated Zimbabwe time.

That doesn't sound good.. but I didn't say Taunton is bad for traffic, just that I seem to end up getting delayed there (but nowhere else on the journey) whatever form of transport I take, eg: train -> unscheduled track maintenance, or de-railed freight train on the line; car -> motorway closure, ...
