[Serious] I can't wait until the election is over
I can't stand politics. The United States government is obviously broken and everyone in congress seems to represent anyone that can pay them money and both presidential candidates are practically the same (i.e. we have no choices; either one or the other). Everyday I hear some horrible article either bashing McCain, Palin, Obama or Biden and most of them are either completely made up or stretch the truth so much they might as well be fiction.
People in a neighborhood near me trashed the mailboxes of anyone with a McCain sign and I've heard of similar things happening to folks with Obama signs.
I'm just so sick of it. In my opinion both candidates suck. Am I the only one who feels this way? I can't wait until this election is over.

I feel the same. Fortunately, I have a bad ear-wax problem, so I don't tend to hear much.

The whole prop 8 thing just amazes me. We are supposed to have a separation of church and state yet most of everyone are voting on it because of their religious beliefs.
If your religion prevents gay people from getting married, why should it have any affect on the gay people who want to get married through the state and not a church? If two gay people get married in a court room, does it really hurt your religious beliefs? What if someone chooses to practice your chosen religion different? What happened to freedom from persecution for your religious beliefs?
In my opinion humanity just goes from one way of oppressing people and ripping people off to another when others wise up. I can't wait to see what the next one is

Yes, just like busting Dad at 2 in the morning on Christmas Day shatters your belief in Santa.
Marriage has become too broad and too badly defined a concept. There are those who will assert that marriage is a union between a man and a woman and there is nothing that anyone can say against that. It would be of more worth to ensure that the legal and economic benefits of a marriage are available to those who do not wish to or cannot be married.
Plus, that would make surnames more interesting.

Although human-rights organization members would start crying over it, a simple IQ test in order to procure a loan, house, voting rights, etc. would be extremely helpful in 'filtering' out.

If there were no benefits imposed by the government for married people, there wouldn't be a problem because the incentive for gay marriage wouldn't be there. Us single programmers who fail at women would also be happy.
Marriage is a religious inspired construct. The religions behind marriage generally don't support two members of the same sex getting married. So what? If marriage was only a religious construct and not something that carried any rewards from the government, what would be the big deal?

I live in a state that could go either way so we are being bombarded with ads everywhere all the time. Thank God for the mute button.

I live in your state. I haven't seen any ads regarding gay marriage.
I am quite annoyed with the casino issue.
Against: "There are loop holes in the casino proposal and ohio will get no taxes from it!"
For: "There are no loop holes!"
Against: "The ad about no loop holes is a lie!"
For: "The previous ad is a lie!"

I wasn't referring to gay marriage. dclamp's the one who dragged this thread into the gay marriage issue.
I was referring to all the McCain/Obama ads everywhere.
And I'll vote for casinos in Ohio just as soon as they allow me to own one...
So where are you stuck in Ohio?

Ah, I understand now.
I reside in the capital city. Unless we are in the matrix... then I would be in a giant egg shaped device filled with goo.

Re: [Serious] I can't wait until the election is over
Why aren't there any gay co-habitation goo-eggs in the Matrix?
I know everyone is enslaved and oppressed by a hegemonic hive-mind intent on utter domination of life on earth, but come on. The eggs containing people with "alternative lifestyles" would basically be zero maintenance, a dirty egg would be a terrible faux pas. It would reduce the carbon footprint of the Matrix considerably.
I don't live here any more.

What I'm basically saying (in bad English form) that both candidates are practically the same so we really don't have much of a choice. Sure, there are little differences here and there but both will perpetuate the existing system in its current form (in fact, maybe even make it bigger).

One of the problems in America is that history for us began....last week, or so. We don't look more than a decade or two back at most, and try to figure out how we got to the current situation. Marriage has a long and remarkably sordid history. Now folks are willing to fight to preserve the institution of marriage. However, the institution they are getting all riled about has been around in its current form for only four to ten decades, depending on which facets you consider most important. I would expect that if the ballot measure were to go back to the marriage restrictions set in this country at the turn of the last century (1900, in case you were wondering which century we are now in), the debate would be considerably hotter than the current one over gay marriage, with much different battle lines.

Problem or a blessing - half full half empty/
It shouldn't matter what marriage meant at the start of the 20th century simply because NONE of those married people are still alive.

Not quite. Since we don't expect to be held accountable for our actions of more than a few years ago, we fail to understand other cultures that have longer memories. A failure to communicate arising from a failure to comprehend is never a glass half full. Our failure to understand our own past, as well as the motivations affecting our present leaves us significantly less able to respond appropriately in some arenas.
