Re: what is the best php editor
There is no "best" editor. It is all up to what you want, what you need, and what your willing to pay for...
NotePad++ is a great free editor with code highlighting.
there is also Dreamweaver and PHPDesigner, which i like.

Voodoo, mastery of which is a prerequisite to becoming a true keyboard maestro.

Notepad & Notepad++ & Dreamweaver is not good for beginners. I think PHP Designer is better for you(If u are beginner).

Re: what is the best php editor
Notepad++ will do that too. Besides, isn't that helpful for everyone, not just beginners?

Re: what is the best php editor
I think that auto code completion is not good for beginners. They will get used to having something else finish the code for them, and become dependent on it instead of learning for themselves.

My favourite is Dreamweaver for the simple fact it follows the highlight_string/highlight_file functions... I haven't found another editor that does yet.

And Dreamweaver aint that bad (keep in mind I hated it for years). If you only use the code editor, it's a great tool. And it's free. Or is it? Dunno, this is China

Well, I'm a PHP newbi but I've been a Java developer for a long time now. Netbeans is my favorite IDE for both. It's cross platform, supports Autocomplete and Can debug PHP code

Beginner/Learning:
- Notepad (Not NPP/Notepad++, but simply, MS Windows Notepad) - BASICS.ü (I really do believe people should start learning from the hard-way before using IDEs - because IDEs make you lazy and ignorant of the fundamentals.)
Advanced/Enthusiast/Pro
- Notepad++ (For people who doesn't want pirated materials, yet can't afford proprietary softies)
- Macromedia/Adobe Dreamweaver - What I love about this is that it supports multiple programming languages (although not as vast compared to NPP), and it also has a mini-reference for most PHP functions (press SHIFT-F1).
Good Luck!

Re: what is the best php editor
Why? It's subjective.... it's asking who has the best fish tacos... everyone is going have their own opinion. Then some one will get in a snip because theirs was left off the list, then it'll turn into a "don't use that because....." or "that's a bad app because.... " besides, quickly scanning this thread, it looks like Notepad++ and Dreamweaver hold the lead...

Re: what is the best php editor
Well, a noob that comes along with just go with what is most used.
Or did you forget the time when you knew zit, and all this gwarra gwarra made no sense at all?
Rule of thumb. If you not sure, follow the crowd.

Re: what is the best php editor
Following the crowd is not always the good thing to do. A 'noob' will have to experiment with the suggested editors to find the one he is most comfortable working with.
If you are walking across a bridge one day and you see a bunch of people jumping off the bridge, would you do it too? (i HATE when parents/teachers/elders ask this question... obviously your not stupid enough to do it...)
