I think it's more the ratio of rep points to posts that matter
I'd just like to point out that, on this scale, I have a ratio of roughly 5 posts per rep point. Yours is around 11 posts per rep. So I'm twice as good a programmer as you . Yep, I'm right behind this new scoring system .

Erm, what does the SELECT keyword mean again?

Typically it takes 11 posts to get that answer through to most sql newbies

i had nearly 2000 posts before they added the scoring system. How do you take that into account?

Even if you knew that info, you still can't do a simple comparison, as which forums people post in (and various other factors) makes a difference to how often they get rated, and how many points they get each time.

The way I see it reps are just a very simplistic (and fairly inaccurate) guide to who is helpful - while I'm currently near the top of the list I don't see myself as being "more helpful" than the people who are a bit further down the list (particularly those just a few places lower, as the points difference is much smaller than to the people above me!).

I'm aware of several people in this thread who make regular good contributions, and do try to "spread the love" when I spot apt posts (in some cases that is rare, due to the forums I focus on) and I remember to do so.

Points are nice, but it's the helping that really counts.
Yup but there is a flaw with it that if a new member joins up and helps out a bunch they can climb the ranks so much faster if they are rep'd by powerful members. When reps were first turned on everyone had very low rep power and it took alot of work to get anywhere.

Just like with post counts, either system doesnt reflect a true view of a persons skill/helpfulness. You can weigh each together to get a generalized view of their skills.

Either way, bottom line is Reps still look cool

I think I had something well over 10,000 when they were turned on. It was around Feb of 2003 or 2004 that they were enabled.

Ummm, you don't get reps for the NUMBER of posts, just for the QUALITY. Keg would probably have one gem less if CC posts could be repped.

The first person to ever get more than one red gem.

I keep looking at the very end of the list, but I assume that anybody who manages to sink into the red leaves or mends their ways before reaching the awesome depths of -100.

Maybe on April 1st Joe could write a small plugin that would switch the positive gems with the negative gems. Then we would have several red and bright red gems for a day lol

You shouldn't have said that publicly, it would actually be a pretty good joke.
