    Tesla Coil

Anyone around here ever built one? I'm currently gathering the materials necessary to build my first one. I'm going to be building a simple spark-gab, as I don't want to spend a bunch of money buying IGBT and other high-voltage semiconductors to make a solid state coil... although that'd be pretty awesome.

A few friends of mine built one at college last year... Their goal was to make it 'play music' (theres a video going round on youtube I think about one making christmass music or something). It works by making the sparks jump over at the right frequency or something which creates some kind of weird buzzing sound...

But they had to stop when they blew out all the lights and a computer in the classroom hehe...

Yeah that's a solid state coil, harder and more expensive to build than a spark gap one. Would be cool to have one though.

Yeah...no. They tried that experiment on MythBusters once.... BUSTED. Didn't happen. Considering the heated battle Tesla was in with Edison.... it's possible that the myth was perpetuated by Edison's people.

At least they got a huge, steel bridge to vibrate on that episode. I thought that was pretty cool, considering the size of the bridge, and the size of the machine.
