    I do believe collision speed conveys only the potential energy of the combined speeds. They won't be colliding at nearly 2xc they be colliding at nearly c. If they were colliding at any higher speed the particles would not exist as they would need an infinite mass.

    it's simple physics:
    If you hit another car head on and you are both going 70mph, you aren't going to go flying out your window at 140mph. You only have the energy from your half of the collision (assuming equal masses)

    It's the same with the protons.two hitting head on is the same as one hitting an immovable object.
