CD Player Problem

I don't know if some of you heard this before, but I'm having problems listening to CD's on my PC. I can't hear the music if I don't have my mic turned on. I think my mic is causing the problem, but I'm not sure why. I think it's my mic, because when I unmute the mic, I can hear the music really quitely playing, but if I mute my mic, the CD music mutes itself along with the mic!

P.S. if it helps, my mic brand is Labtec

Any suggestions?

Check ya leads man. Rip out the mic and make sure the speakers are in the right hole. My SB Live has green for speaker out and red for mic in.

I think I know where to plug in my mic and speakers... It even has the colors like you said: for me is red for mic and purpule for Speakers. But there is a third hole which does not have a color, but a picture of a CD and a music note, and I tried every combination, and still the sound produced was VERY low. I tried going to mulitmedia in the control panel, and changing the volume of the CD, but nothing. The only way for me to hear the music normally is to put head phones into the CD drive and listen from there...

Have you checked the mixer control? Also, if you have a utility that came with the card maybe the volume is turned down in that. Maybe even if you have Napster, it's volume may be turned down (which affects the whole system). Maybe the speakers are just f**ked...

Sounds a lot like you have unpowered (ie not mains-powered) speakers which are meant to plug into an amplified line-out plug, and they're plugged into an unamplified plug, designed for use with powered speakers. Of course that's not necessarily the case. Whatever it is, it's a bit strange.

Did you physically try opening the computer and checking to see if the audio(4-pin) connector from the CD-ROM drive is connected to the drive and the sound card. Sometimes they work themselves loose. Hope this helps.

You prob have the CD Audio cable plugged in to the wrong connection on the sound card. Most newer ones have 3, CD-Audio, CD-Digital, and AUX. If you plug the CD-Audio in to AUX lots of time it will freak out like that. A use for that AUX plug it for home computer Karaoke machines (God knows why).
