php check file if exist

i am having to check file from my website:

my code:

$filename = '/public_html/nkRpl/data/RPL/35134910862494.RPL';

if (file_exists($filename)) {
    echo "The file $filename exists";
} else {
    echo "The file $filename does not exist";
}
?>

then the message: The file /public_html/nkRpl/data/RPL/35134910862494.RPL does not exist

but the file is already in this directory: /public_html/nkRpl/data/RPL/35134910862494.RPL

Remember that file names in linux are case sensitive. It is worth checking this if you haven't already.
