Talking To what extend copy paste is good

i am memeber of one forum where "forum feedback" section is full of compliant like, My x copy pasted my code i provided in other post Mr.Y did same etc etc and i think most of the time member try to find Original post in forum as proof ....so wondering to what extend such copy paste should be permitted in public developer forum like VBF and other?and if someone provided any code snippet posted by some other memeber just to help out seeker will it be sort of sin or crime in public forum?

PS: Although in that forum poster gets yearly - month and even Weekly awards for earing more point

The main thing is helping, but it is rude to pretend (even accidentally) that you wrote code (or a tutorial, etc) that you actually copied... depending on the circumstances, it could even be illegal.

If you are posting somebody elses work it is polite to say so, and preferably say who originally posted it, and/or link to the original.

My personal preference is to link to the original rather than re-post it, so I keep a lot of bookmarks in my browser for it (with separate folders: one for SQL Server, one for Excel, etc). On a site like ours it gives the extra benefit that the person who originally posted it can be rated for it.

What some people do is keep the code snippets in text or code files, and within the code add a comment that has the URL that they got it from.

yes you are 101% right and that should be the approach one must follow, but assume if VBF also starts giving "cool" weekly, month gift (like technical books, camera and even Cash) that this forum is offering to memeber no wonder these type of cheating is obvious even in Clean forum like this

and on top of that what if memeber's point automatically gets credited/Increased based on content length or no. of word you used in your post

What some people do is keep the code snippets in text or code files, and within the code add a comment that has the URL that they got it from.
This is good practice. When in your code snippet you pasted from the net you comment the link where you got it from you are insuring that any future issues or modifications will always be able to revert to that original post/code.

As for Forum copying of code to post on other threads, its more of a faupax (however you spell it) and not very good netiquete. If you are going to repost someome elses code at least provide the link to where you got it so you are passing credit to the author. Some people dont like to navigate to another thread to get their code and like it being reposted. I would prefer the posting of a link to where they can obtain the code snippet. If you have a variation of their code, you can post it but still post the link to where you got it from.

Sounds like alot of members are "fronting" pretending that they know how to code

Well thats how you presented it lol.

If they are searching and reposting code and presenting it as if they wrote it then why cant they actually just write it? All that does it make them look like they are nothing more then a real live Google. Your members may realize that and at that point they wouldnt get the respect from their peers or maybe prizes. Do they validate that the posted of the code is indeed the original author?

Re: To what extend copy paste is good

hmm yes it's almost like 10-20+ google are processing OP's post and at the end of the day producing 100+ post each day...

Nope most of the time or rather almost everytime "WatchDog" do that job for webmaster :P
You said right there is no repect amongs Top peers it self,it's just like Mendhak, robDog,si and other (1000 +REP) are fighting with WebMaster to pull down each others reputation point...

i am glad to be a part of VBF where i learn so much in very short time both professionaly and personaly, and hoping those day will never come in VBF

Those days are past us, hopefully, now as we have issues just like every other programming site. It just depends on how you handle them.

Good luck on your site, you guys will get there soon enough

Members report to mods about posts that seem to copy paste everything not just codes but explanation of the code in carbon copy style and say it as their own. It's a matter of being vigilant.
