[RESOLVED] Looking for a Word
I'm working on a picture viewer application and currently I have a label that reads "Picture x of y" for the jpegs in a folder. That was perfect when I was only displaying jpegs but now I'm also displaying videos and so I'm looking for a short, descriptive, word to replace "Picture" that would be a reasonable description of both jpegs and videos. "Multimedia file" is too long but I can't think of anything else.

Re: Looking for a Word
"Visual" might work, as it has some Star Trek like connotations ("Can you get me a visual?"). "Image" might be suitable, but it is almost interchangeable with Picture. You can have a moving image, but you can also have a moving picture.
I figured I'd put the internet to work, and went to this site:
http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/picture
There are a few options here that might work. I don't believe there is a common use word that covers still and moving pictures, but there are several candidate synonyms that I think would work. I particularly like vignette, as that is roughly a story. A picture can tell a story, and a movie IS a story, so that's an entertaining option, but a bit obscure to most people. "Montage" would be a little more accessible, and whether it is one image or many is left a bit gray in that word. Alternatively, you could just go for a word that sounds vaguely right, while also being so obscure that people might think you made it up, such as "Chromo".
There are several other options in that link.
My usual boring signature: Nothing

Thanks but maybe I'll just do "X of y".

Re: Looking for a Word
How about "File x of y"?
Or ...
Change the caption to reflect the file extension.
If its a image extension then use "picture" else if its a video extension then use video etc.

Re: Looking for a Word
"File" is not a bad idea. I don't want to use the file extension though because as the user steps through a folder that contains 10 jpegs and 2 avis it would be confusing to see "AVI 11 of 12".

Re: Looking for a Word
Oh yea if its mixed content then forget that suggestion and go with "File".
