Since it is so quiet in here, I think I will start building a time machine.

I need someone who understands Time. Excellent knowledge of Machines is an advantage...

I will be heading this project No Discussions around this...

The purpose of this time machine is to go into the future and see how has "General Discussion / Chit Chat " developed say after 50 years...

No kregg, you cannot apply, however you can watch it from a 'safe' distance

Age no bar - Rob you can apply
Physcial Apprearance no bar (that means three eyed creatures can apply. I feel they can be great importance)
Rice Eaters no bar
Occupation no bar (Tram drivers, school bus drivers, What the heck... any driver can apply... I need someone to 'drive' the time machine)

This is such a lofty motive.

You could always go back in time and invest money in ebay, Microsoft, etc and become a billionaire.

You could also go 1000 years into the future and see what they've discovered in science, medicine and other fields and then bring those discoveries back and change the time line of history making it a better time line.

Another thing you could do is go back to the time when Newton or Einstein lived and bring with you all the latest theories, knowledge and discoveries and give all of it to them and that would change the time line from when they lived and then our present time would be different.

Another thing you could do is if there was some day that you had a particularly bad day at work you could relive that day and make it better.

You could also go back and prevent the assassination of JFK or any other assaination you wanted to.

It's sort of interesting to think about. Some of the movies that I've enjoyed the most dealt with playing with time. Back to the Future, GroundHog Day and a number of others.

Is an aeroplane a time machine?

Think about it.. You set off on a 8 hour trip from the UK to Australia at 3pm, yet when you arrive in Australia it's 7am, what happened to those extra 8 hours? you travel forward in time?

Say you stay in Australia for an hour then travel to America (say 5 hour trip) you'll arrive in America (Arizona) at 4pm, the previous day, so you'll travel back in time?

You're just traveling through different time zones in the cases you're citing. Time is still moving forward at a constant rate but the references to clock time are changing.

Yeah.. But, there is a way to do it so that you do actually 'lose' time, can't remember how, but if you travel around enough, to enough different time zones when you get back to where you started the time will be out of sync.

If you leave your time zone and you travel here or there or wherever then if you had a watch on and the watch says that 24 hours have gone by then when you return to your time zone 24 hours will have gone by.

The above is true as long as the speed you're traveling at isn't close to the speed of light. If you accelerate to a speed that is very close to the speed of light and then you returned to your original location then if from your perspective 24 hours had passed much more time could have passed(days, months or years) for the people that didn't travel with you but lived in the place you left and returned to.

This theory has actually been tested and proved using super accurate clocks. When we're able to get up to more than 95% of the speed of light then such time differences will become more noticeable. Now you need super accurate clocks to notice relativistic changes in time because we can't presently get up to speeds that are close to the speed of light.
