I also run with no virus scanner. Most malware enters on the proviso that you are running with admin privileges. The second line of defence is taking a cautious approach when browsing the Internet (i.e: not using P2P to download cracked software, not downloading from unknown sources, clicking yes to random popups, etc ,etc).

I have not paid a yearly subscription to an AV company since 2003 and have not been any the worse off. Maybe better off because my PC runs without a resource hogging auto protect sitting in the background.

That said, the nature of the threat is changing rapidly as the malware writers are turning to less obvious, more covert methods of infecting their victims (one example). So I would not publicly recommend that you ditch your AV protection in place of nothing because what I and dclamp are doing is taking a risk. I would however recommend that you don't shell any money. There are free online and offline scanners (AVG, Trendmicro, Clamwin) available as well as free personal Firewall and Spyware scanners.

    Yes visualad
I normally use admin account and should try using a normal account.

hm, btw, that virus think i posted is not a real virus. Dont warry

Any anti-virus product that supports the EICAR test file should detect it in any file providing that the file starts with the following 68 characters, and is exactly 68 bytes long:

    X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
    http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

i agree with you. I am pretty much, web wise. i always hover over a link before clicking it. i dont click on sites i am not familiar with. i never download any exe files. if something looks suspicious, i will google it.

I did a Trend virus scan today, just because i was curious, not one virus.

    Re: Virus Guard Hack !

I don't tend to use any antivirus or firewall unless I am using a laptop, simply because there is nothing better than using a bit of common sense. I couldn't tell you off heart what I'd do when a situation comes along, but I'd know how to react and what not to do due to years of messing around on the computer downloading and using all sorts of programs.

It's like being a ex-drug addict; Now you know pretty much the ins and outs of the it (not precisely enough to keep full alert), and you have all the previous experience that gives you enough reasons not to mess around with it or touch it.

And that antivirus message is pretty old. It's like a test virus for all antivirus programs. Basically, if your antivirus doesn't even spot that, then you have the right to wet yourself. If it has spotted it, then it's no biggie.
