    Knockin' on Heaven's Door

How many artists have done a cover of this song?

I just overheard my coworkers in their office say Eric Clapton did the original. I didn't think that was right. So I googled it and saw it was Bob Dylan. So then they said EC also did a cover. I didn't believe them, but googled that and got hits. Then I saw it was done by Guns N Roses and Avril Lavigne. Any others? Is the song really worth that many remakes???

Wikipedia does help you in things like this.

From the looks of things, it's been done to death.

I used to busk it. If we got bored we'd do a reggae version.

Great idea...I think any half decent song sounds twice as good when reggaed up!

I think one of the best covers ever done was Pearl Jam's remake of Last Kiss. The original is so...peppy. His girlfriend just died, can't he sound as sad as the lyrics? At times a remake is definitely in order.

The guns n roses version is not too bad..

but really its nothing compared to the number of covers done on certain Elvis and Beatles songs, which have been covered to absolute death.

While looking for decent johnny cash covers once, I found this website.

    http://www.secondhandsongs.com/home/

It has a pretty good listing of cover songs, and is easy to search on various criteria.

Eleanor Rigby by the beatles for example, claims 129 artists have covered it, and they do list every single artist, and the year.

    Re: Knockin' on Heaven's Door

I really only hate it because my band in college covered it... Probably 4000 times...

I got so sick of it I started singing it like Elvis would. When that got tiresome I sang it like Johnny Cash. Then Zappa, Tom Waits, etc... Anything to make it interesting.

There are a handful of songs I can no longer listen to. This is one of them.

All along the watchtower is probably the best example. Bob Dylan did it well but Hendrix probably made it one of the best songs ever!

You seem to listen to a lot of dead guys. What do you listen to that's new?

Loadsa new stuff aswell. I like alot of different music, just let my love for dead guys music get in the way sometimes ....Kings of Leon, bedouin soundclash, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The Libertines probably my favourite band that are still alive, almost!

    What about you?

    Re: Knockin' on Heaven's Door

I haven't heard of any of them, I will have to check them out.

Mine: Coldplay, Matchbox 20, Moby...sometimes I like a few songs by someone but don't know what else they do (since the days of buying a whole CD for one song seem to be over !) I teach group exercise classes and for indoor cycling I get to mix my own CD's. My latest has Selling the Drama by Live, Southside by Moby, Take Me Out by ? (it's new), Scar Tissue by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rock You Like A Hurricane by the Scorpions and In the End by Linkin Park (I *love* that song but it's so unlike what I usually like!). If you can recommend anything motivating for exercise, I'll give it a try.

Depends on the mood and the amount of exercise. If I had a bicycle, (and if I ever exercised) I think I'd go on forever, burning over 9000 kj's per second by listening to 30 Seconds to Mars. They are by far the best modern band I've heard in a while!

Check out CSS and MGMT. I could work out to both of them!
