Starting a company varies rom country to country and sta te to state. First you need to decide the type of business: software product sales, software consulting or other. You need a business plan and direction first too. You cant just say "I want to start a software compnay" without any research, planning and focus.

Well, you usually write a business plan because you have an idea or product, and you want a bank to give you a loan to start it up.

Do you have an idea or product yet?
If not, who are you writing the business plan for?

No one is doubting its not real, just "software" is a broad term and you havent even stated the answers to our questions yet.

Re: how to start software company

I'll be blunt. If you are asking these types of questions, you are not in a position to be starting a company, and shouldn't be thinking of trying.

Businesses usually don't just spring into existence with a full corporate structure and employees, unless you have a clear vision and enormous capital, or take over an existing company. Typically, you start by identifying a business opportunity, then you slave away to develop the product, and if you're lucky you eventually get to sell a few copies. If you're successful in building up a customer base and have a steady flow of income, then you can start thinking about expanding your business and your product range.

You don't seem to have progressed beyond the notion that you wish to start a software development company. (This a fine notion, but then what?) Your questions are very open-ended: There is no fixed number of positions for any company in any market space; there is no fixed corporate structure (although there are many typical examples). You need to decide these things for yourself and come up with a business plan which makes sense. It is impossible to hire a hundred developers when you don't have a product yet and likewise it would be foolish to try and support a dozen products with customer numbers in the thousands when you only have one or two people.

Software is a huge, broad market. You need to identify a very specific market segment where you think that you can offer a product or service that creates value. Additionally, some markets have a higher barrier of entry than others; for example, I could dream about aerospace engineering and then declare that I wished to start a company which built planes, but I have absolutely no doubt that the idea would get no further than that. Anyone can develop software that is completely stand-alone, but not much software is — a lot of money lies in software which integrates with or builds on the foundation of other products to create additional value for the end-user. It takes more than just programming skills to develop such a product or service: you need to first be in a position where you have the necessary information, contracts and agreements, and so on and so forth.

This is why you have had no luck in your research. It is not that there is a lack of information available, but that you are asking the wrong questions.

Keep your dream, but start small!

(Of course, I could be completely wrong: you could already have already identified some market niche and have a finished product that fills it — but you haven't said enough to give that impression.)

OK, im with Pengate on this one. Any company regardless of product requires a huge amount of planning to execute correctly. I'm not going to repeat what pengate has said, instead take a look at the following book. It will give you some idea of how entrepreneurs start business. Be warned as i have stated this is no walk in the park. http://www.lavoisier.fr/notice/gbDUO3A3RHL2RL3O.html

I also want to let you know this is not a get rich quick book, its the type of book that gives answers to common questions when starting a business, including planning, finances, legal etc.

    hi,

I agree with Pengate on this also, either a company grows organicly or is planned to the finest detail and has a huge capital benifit. i once atempted to start a company, I learnt a great deal of how business works however i stoped prior to blowing any great deal of money on it.

The only person that can tell you how the structure should look is you. you really need a product or service prior to going any further.

    Good luck.
