    Question Elite

    Hi,

    Can anyone remember Elite?

I had back in the days of the Commodore 64 & 128. I wondered if you can still get hold of a copy for the PC?

They need to go in the ROMs directory, in correct alphabetical order of names (so leaving them as IC24/25/26/27 is fine), the names themselves don't matter.

    www.parksie.net/Elite.zip (in about 5 minutes' time )

You can Download Elite:Final Frontier II for the p.c. from the web. I loved Elite, and FF2 is a huge step beyond it. If you can't find it, I think I have a copy on my hard drive somewhere.

SD, If you wouldn't mind. It's not on the link I posted above, or at least I can't see it.

I've never seen it, is it as good as the original?

    Cheers

It's much better than the original (if that is possible!!). You can land on planets, it's all texture mapped. You can buy bigger space ships until you have a huge beast (about 3,000,000 credits I seem to remember with a couple of thoudsand tons of cargo space - i.e. serious kick ass lasers). It's a little bit harder to get the hang of (more controls than the old Elite) but well worth it. In fact I'm itching for a game right now!!!

I'll try and find a retro site with it, oitherwise I'll post it up here (I think it fitted on two floppies). Of course the graphics are a bit dated now, but the gameplay was amazing.

The authors have a web site here

    http://www.frontier.co.uk/

They are talking aboiut releasing the source code soon.

The game was actually called first encounters now that I see the site. It was basically Elite III (Final Frontier was Elite II which was also pretty good). Select First Encounters from the games menu on the left of the screen. You can see from the screenshots how cool it is.

You can download the game from

    http://www.jades.org/download.htm#downldffe

Make sure to apply the patches though to bring it up to v1.06 as the orignal game was very buggy. The patches make it almost totally stable.

    Download the patch from

    http://www.jades.org/patches.htm

I'm not sure, but you'll probably have to boot the game in DOS mode to run it.

    I hope you enjoy,

The second was called 'Elite II: Frontier' and the third was 'Frontier: First Encounters' if I remember correctly. I've got copies of both somewhere. They're good games, but I found the military missions really frustrating - did anybody ever manage to nuke a satellite? I don't think I ever succeeded in doing it. I also only ever took one assasination mission where the target actually turned up. Maybe I had the extra buggy version? I always wanted a class 5 miltary drive, but never found one Had to settle for a big mother of a ship with a large plasma accelerator and a few hundred shield generators
