Stupid Sibling
My brother got booked by the police, and they gave him a choise: lose your licence for 3 months, or try to get by on one point for a full year.
I thought there was no way he could possibly last 12 months without being pulled over (he seems to get pulled over a lot), and told him as much.
But he decided he was smarter, and went for the 1 point for 1 year option.
He recently was booked for unsafe overtaking, not stopping for a stop sign and driving with 3 others in the car at 2:00am without P-Plates. In Australia, all of those are offences for a provisional driver. He's due in court in 3 weeks.
The funniest part is that the date on the ticket indicates that this happened less than 3 days after he handed in his choise to go for a whole year on one point!
So, anyone got stories about idiotic family members?
You can't pick your relatives, and you get in trouble if you hit them with a shovel.

Re: Stupid Sibling
When I was young and stupid I got a ticket doing 134 mph in a 55 zone. Never saw the cop hiding under the bridge. The cop was actually quite a cool guy and was impressed because I happened to be driving the identical car he was - an '82 Crown Victoria with a 351W interceptor motor - mine was an ex-highway patrol car and he never thought such a boat could go that fast. He said if I hadn't exited the freeway at the next off-ramp he never would have caught me.
The judge was not so amused and gave me a lengthy lecture on traffic safety. What saved my sorry butt was the fact I didn't get a reckless op ticket as well (6 additional points on top of the two for speeding and two more for twenty-plus over) because I was the only one on the road 2am on a Tuesday morning and wasn't drinking.
Why did I do it? The car had a 140 mph speedometer (certified calibration) and I just put a brand-new set of Goodyear Eagle VR60 tires (rated 149 mph) on it.
That was a great car... paid $650 for it at the OSHP auction in late '85.
Obviously I'm the only idiot in my family...

My parents used to own a VW Beetle. The speedo went up to 220kph (130mph).
(I still love the original VW Bugs, and I fully intend to buy one when I've got money to spare)

Re: Stupid Sibling
When I was WAY younger (around 4 years old) I got angry with my sister. We were fighting and she shoved her bedroom door closed while my fingers were still there... I got so angry I started smacking my sister's door in with a soup-spoon... needless to say that my father gave me the beating of my life!

You were making actual progress, attempting to beat her door in with a soup spoon? You're either incredibly persistent, or you drink soup with a hammer.

That it? :P

I'm hoping to get a car like that in a few months' time. $3k for it, but it's worth it. 1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT with VR4 body kit and turbocharger. The speedometer goes to 160, but it can likely get closer to 200. Can't wait to find out

Unless the motor has had some serious work done to it I doubt you'll get past 160 - let alone 200. Heck, the new 500+ hp Z06 Corvettes will only hit 198.
Nice car, though - but if you plan to go that fast take my advice and paint it black. Red sportscars get way too much attention from the cops.

Re: Stupid Sibling
Yeah I'm going to agree with homer, highly doubt you'll be getting close to 200 mph... I don't know what the gearing on that car is, but who knows if the gearing would even let you get there anyway.

I wonder if the points scale goes into negative numbers!

Or possibly wherever he lives uses a different points system to Australia: Here, you get nine points to start with and lose points for each traffic offence. I've never been booked, so I've still got nine points.

Re: Stupid Sibling
Sorry, I was talking about the UK system.
In the UK, we gain points on our license. If we accumulate up to 12 points, we have our license revoked. Just to make a comparison of the points system, speeding would give you 3-6 penalty points. And it gets worse: if in the 2 years of you passing your practical test that you gain 6 points on your license, it is revoked.
Now does what I had said before make sense?

That's a completely messed up and nonsensical traffic offence system.
But at least you drive on the correct side of the road.

Re: Stupid Sibling
Australia gives you 9 attempts before your license is revoked, in the UK we have about 2-4 attempts. Tell me what is so messed up about that? I thought it would be a more safe system.
