Resolved [RESOLVED] VB 6, SQL Server 2000, and Crystal Reports Price

    I wanna ask something...

When we wanna run our own bussiness in software development, we surely need to invest few development software...

I wanna know the price of VB 6, SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition, and Crystal Reports 8.5 Developer Edition, anybody knows???

And when we're going to deploy the application on our client's computers, it's also needed to have the DBMS (SQL Server 2000 Ecterprise or Standard) and the reporting tool (Crystal Reports Enterprise) installed, anybody knows their price too???

    thanx

VB 6 will be expensive as its no longer produced or supported by Microsoft. You can search ebay or something for any prices. VB.NET Express is a free download.

There is also SQL Express also for free but Crystal Reports is not free and you can find the price on the http://businessobjects.com website.

If you are going to start your own business in the year 2008, then I would strongly suggest you toss out the notion of using VB6.

If this is to be a professional software development business, then I would also suggest you not bother with the free, Express versions, of .NET

I would invest in the professional version of Visual Studio 2008. Granted, this will be a bit expensive, but we are not talking about programming hobbists here.

As other said VB 2008 is the way to go but I would recommend to stay away from Extress since you need Crystal Reports.
CR is expensive product and may cost you more when bought separately - Visual Studio 2008, Professional or higher includes CR.
After all you can't use Extress Editions for more or less serious software development (not to mention commercial).

Here are few links for you:

    yeah
but i live in a small town that clients dont have very up-to-date hardware..
so It would be a little bit too much for me too invest on the latest development software... like VB 2008
so what do you think I should do?? Do you think I should provide the hardware too??or should I move to a bigger city??

Doesnt matter, anywhere you go you will find that same story, clients dont have money and want to get the world for $1. Clients are cheap and try to get the lowest price they can get. It is what it is if they want to have custom programming/applications then they need to be ready to spend the $ or continue using their calculators and notebook paper

Sorry Pasvorto but I would never buy software for my business (for personal use maybe) from any on-line auctions and EBay is no different.
Whe you buy it directly from the vendor you will pay few extra bucks but you can be certain you are getting genuine stuff and noone else will ever use your license.
Exception could be software that is no longer supplied by the manufacturer (like VB6).

I agree with RhinoBull on that, especially for business purposes, and especially especially if you are going to use it to write commerical software.

You might want to look into buying a MSDN subscription. In the long run it will be cheaper.

Re: VB 6, SQL Server 2000, and Crystal Reports Price

Thanx guys. i just got the price list from amazon..
But what makes the developer editions so cheap??
Is it the features??If i want to write enterprise applications plus its databases, is it enough to do the development process in that edition?? what's the concept of developer edition??

Re: VB 6, SQL Server 2000, and Crystal Reports Price

The idea of a Developer Edition is that you are only allowed to use it for writing/testing your program - the licensing strictly prohibits you from using it for normal real-world usage.

In terms of features, they are usually identical to other editions (and you can generally pick which edition you want during installation).

The reason for the low price is simple marketing - it makes things easier for the developer to use that software, who then sell their software and a need for the full product to other people.
