    Is it possible to write my own app to send/receive sms text messages on my pda?

    yes - look at the Microsoft.WindowsMobile and the Microsoft.WindowsMobile.PocketOutlook namespaces

    I am also interested in doing this but that link makes me think you need the full version of visual studio to utilize the mobile features?
