The latest version of that book is called "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus", still by Andre Lamothe. Corny title, but the content is good. It's really the same as the older versions (there was originally a book covering DOS programming in C) but with a later version of DirectX (the book is based on DX6).

I have just finished my home page, which has links to lots of DirectX sites(beginners to).
Goto www.cybercarsten.cjb.net, and look under Tutorials.
