Memory Usage and your .NET applications - questionnaire
Hi guys & gals,
I hope this isn't against forum rules but thought that people might be interested in this.
We are running a questionnaire about memory usage and your .NET applications. We will be starting work on a memory profiler at some point and would like some idea of what areas we should be focusing on.
If you develop software professionally and would like to give your feedback based on your typical experiences then you can fill it in here:
Memory Usage Survey
It literally takes about 5 minutes, no long winded answers ever needed.
If you put your name and email address at the end you will be entered into our draw to win 1 of 10 copies of our ANTS Profiler software. The new one is coming out soon and trust me, it will be worth it!
Your contact details won't be used for sales or marketing purposes - we obviously just need an address that you can be contacted on should you win.
So, if you want to answer some general questions and help me out I’d really appreciate it.
Stim

What does this mean?
Is memory usage a functional requirement of your application?
An application will use memory. I don't think it would ever be a requirement or specification. It's like saying "The web application must work on a computer and take up CPU cycles."

Re: Memory Usage and your .NET applications - questionnaire
What i was trying to say was - when creating applications are there set targets to the amount of memory the application should ideally use. I don't mean physically but rather as a result of some intended maximum that would be expected for an application of that particular type.
Some companies, espeically when creating a product that will go up against other leading products in the market, might make the amount of memory their product will use a functional requirement during development so that it can then be compared favourably against the other products. I'm sorry if i've not used a clear enough statement in the questionnaire.
You obviously can't specify it at the precise megabyte limit or anything like that but i hope that explains it a bit better.

lol, fair enough but i do promise - it's only for contacting people after the draw is made. I can pop your vb forum name onto the final list and contact you via here should you win.
Thanks for taking the time, it really is appreciated. There has been a big response to it which is great news for me. Very surprising trends.

Done. My e-mail address was [email protected], heh.
So far I've found every .Net application I've used or made to be fairly heavy in the memory usage so I just assumed everyone didn't care about the memory usage. It's such a heavy framework.

it's not only memory usage but memory leaks that the application will help track down. It's a very tough problem to solve so the more info i can get - the better.
Thanks to all who fill it in. I'll be sure to add your name too.
