invisionfree forums
I had just recently contacted someone concerning comment that they probably shouldn't run a forum at invisionfree. Personally, I don't care, but I think its like wearing jeans to an interview. Installing phpBB would at least be wearing a nice shirt and black pants; it would go to show that you are at least trying. Running a forum at invisionfree, imo, just shows lazyness on their part.
What are your opinions on people who run a forum from [insert free forum hoster here]?

You've elegantly captured the essence of this forum's interest in your topic.

Re: invisionfree forums
Last time I used Invision their forum was superior to phpBB and they had a free version that you could install on any web server.
Is this no longer the case?

It was never "free". IPB 1.3f was trial software that had no limitations built in. You could have unlimited members, unlimited posts, and use it for however you wanted. However, with version 2 and up they put in limits. And with the release of version 2, they don't care about people who are running 1.3f or are installing it because they don't sell it or provide downloads for it. However, you can find it on your favorite pirate network .

And now it's only a matter of time before the g-men hunt you down for your heresy. I hope you like electrodes.

So should I understand this correctly, InvisionFree Forums are basically forum software? I feel old for not knowing this.

1.3f is basically free. They don't care that you use it, however it is technically breaking copyright rules. But if the copyright isn't enforced on that product, then its pretty much considered abondonware. Anything higher than 1.3f has limitations ect. But, you will want to apply the unofficial patches if you are going to use as there are a few lingering exploits that the authors never fixed in 1.3 before moving to 2.X. Which, I would highly recommend applying the patches or buying the latest version.

How so? I thought they allowed it to be downloaded and used for free. What rules are you breaking?

That's incorrect. You're thinking of trademarks

See this wikipedia section (that is now removed for some reason?)
Sorry, I'm talking about all this VERY loosely.
Maybe it was free, but I always thought it was really a trial.

@BillGeek: The mods feared my overwhelming popularity. They suspected the beginnings of a coup, followed by mass execution of all mods and bad coders, so they had to shut me down while they weeded out my rabid followers. There will come a day..
