    Memory upgrade

    Hey all,

My laptop takes pc 3200/4200 memory.
I have some pc 5300 memory laying around.
If I were to install that memory in my laptop, would it simply run at 4200; the max my laptop supports?
Or are there more serious consequences?

    Thanks,

Depends, what is the bus speed supported by your laptop's mother board?

    I believe it's 533MHz.
    It's an Inspiron 6000.

If you go to crucial.com, you should be able to find the RAM suitable for your laptop, assuming it's not an unknown model by an unknown company.

the rating of the ram is the maximum it can run at. It should work in your laptop as long as it's capable of running faster than the laptop can support. Even if you can't run it at full mhz, you can mess with the latencies and pick up some of the difference.

Its like giving you a plate full of food, 130% more than you can handle. The 30% is still there, untouched, but you would eat the 100%.

    If that makes sense.

better analogy: Hooking up 100 watt speakers to a 10 watt amp. They still play but they won't be utilized to their fullest.
