individual sites
Are all the sites in the Internet.com network individually owned? Or how does that work. Because it seems that the sites should look pretty much the same if they are not individually owned.
The reason i ask is because VBF seems to look the nicest, while sister sites such as PHPBuilder and CodeGuru look terrible and are full of ads.

Re: individual sites
All the sites are owned by Jupitermedia. If you look at the internet.com toolbar at the top of the page, all of the sites in the drop down menus are Jupitermedia owned.
Many of the sites were acquired and some were built. When sites are acquired, a decision is generally made on whether it is worth rolling the site into a Jupitermedia CMS (Content Management System).
Some sites do look better than others. Some have features others don't have. If you look under the Developer drop down above, all of those sites fall under my direction as far as content and focus (including VBForums). JPnyc is on my team and he is responsible for all the forums (like 25+ of them).
You are right that some don't look the best, and that some have more ads than others. We are working on some of those. In general, the content is more important than the look. In general, each site is a different community and so it is addresssed slightly different.
VBForums was lucky. It was very lucky. When ads were being rolled into the forums, Joe (JPnyc) and I took a pretty big stand on the huge ads. I took the stand for Codeguru and for here. Joe I believe jumped in front of the truck for all the forums (so to speak). On Codeguru we ended up with a lot of the ads anyway in the forums, but we were able to get a link to click to hide them. Here we managed to keep most of them off the right side. Joe and I took a few bruises to get that to happen.
There are lots of reasons I won't discuss as to why some sites look the way the do, or don't look the way they do. If anyone ever has any *Constructive* comments or criticisms on any Jupitermedia site, then send me an email. I can't promise changes, but I can promise that I take such feedback very seriously.

Thanks for getting back Brad
I understand your perspective as to ads. My boss wants as many ads as he can fit on a page
I will get back to you with some constructive ideas! Thanks!

This is a battle Joe and I have been fighting for years.... .
Of course, I understand the balance that is needed; however, at the end of the day the ads can't be such that they keep people off the sites. (Duh )

Actually... I stopped going to WebDeveloper.com because of the ads. lol. I feel cramped with all the ads.

I've noticed the difference between VBForums and other Jupitermedia sites but never mentioned it not wanting to jinx it; you see, I hoped it was an oversight at the least, so I appreciate what you (plural) have done for us!

Some times it is better to mention things to JPnyc and me. Even if it is in a PM. We actually use the feedback to help make a stand on many issues.
