    Skype

My company has a few new customers in New Zealand and Australia. So we will have customers in South America. I am looking for a cheaper way to be able to call these clients on a regular basis other than email. So I was looking at getting a Skype Account. I am wondering if any one has or is using Skype to make phone calls. How is the quality, are there lots of dropped calls, etc? Pricing is it worth it? How does it work at public hot spots, hotels etc?

    Thanks

Public hotspots, not so much. Bandwidth.. in some public hotspots with bandwidth monitors you can even lose your connection. Quality is alright, but usually not fantastic. There's really no significant benefit to using skype over email. You're likely to be more productive over email, or just on the phone. Unless you have some weird desire to stare at your clients.

    Re: Skype

When using skype for computer to computer calls it really depends on the headset or mic that you are using, calls can be crystal with a good one and be horrid with a cheap one. Over the course of year i've never experienced a dropped call. I never used it outside of this one niche of the service, so i can't speak to the pricing or the hotspot stuff.

Thanks, so you are just using it to speak to other skype users then? Are you using a headset or hand held phone?

    Re: Skype

Yeah both users had the skype client installed on their pc's. I used a headset. Mostly this was for use when playing WoW before they had built-in voice stuff. As long as both users have a good internet connection and good headset it was just like a phone call.

I'm not sure how Skype works, but I was recently at a relative's home fixing a problem with their IE, and I had to remove the skype IE plug-in because it would give a fatal error everytime they closed IE. I think this only happened when they went from IE6 to IE7. Skype itself was working okay, it was the skype IE plug-in that was conflicting with IE7. Other than that, I hear alot of good things about Skype.
