[RESOLVED] Error in reading new pen drive
Hi all,
I got a new Kingston pen drive of 4GB in size. I've plug th pen and try to open it, and wont. Ask to format it. I do, but it wont work. Gives a message that "Windows was to unable the complete format."
Then I try to do it on command prompt. But no luck. Give an error, "Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable". I don't see this message before for a pen drive, about the Track 0.
Anything I can do for it. I'm really worried about this.
Thanks.

Re: Error in reading new pen drive
If it's new take it back to where you bought it and they should replace it for you.

Re: Error in reading new pen drive
Have you tried both NTFS and / or FAT32 format? im not sure but it could be that our kingston pen drive is malfunctioning and can only format in fat32 instead of ntfs or vice versa.
You could also try email kingston for support they might be able to do something for you.

Yep, I already do that, and now waiting for there replay.
By the time, I have another option in my mind to test. How about try to formating in Linux environment of the pen drive. But I have to find a Linux computer first. What is your comment on it..

There's no harm trying it. You could download a live cd so that when you burn it onto a cd it will just act as if it was a real OS installed.

Re: Error in reading new pen drive
We've had a discussion on the formatting of pen drives before. Use the command prompt format command to format in ntfs, or use the command prompt convert program. Microsoft doesn't want you to be able to have removable media formatted in ntfs so they removed the option from xp and vista's format. It is there in 2k and it can be converted after formatting.
Have you tried running a scandisk on the drive? Try running diskmgmt.msc and check the options for it in there. Does it have a drive letter assigned?

At the same time, already try scandisk on the drive. When I click Start button, the dialog box closed and no any message display.

I try to format on Disk Management also. But get a message that, format not completed successfully. I can change and assign new drive letter also. Even though I can't format the drive.
I observe one thing also. Check the driver properties, mentioned that used space as well as free space of the pen is 0 bytes. Not only that, display the file system as RAW.

Re: Error in reading new pen drive
it's a bad drive then. Error in the memory chip. It has to be able to read the boot sector of the disk to know where the partitions are, since the partition information for the first four primary partitions are stored in the last bytes of the boot sector. If it can't read that, the drive is useless. Buy a new one. They are very cheap now. I have seen 2gb ones for $30 u.s. dollars in stores and you could probably order one from crucial.com pretty cheap if you have to have one.

Yes, I think so. Bad luck
I've contact the Kingston support center, and after checking the serial number of the drive they said it sis not a Kingston product.
