Set datasource from VB through dialog
Hello,
So i have Visual Studio 2005
I also have Crystal Report XI (11.0)
I create a Crystal Report project and use an existing report I created with CR XI.
This report is linked to an excel file.
Is there a way from my VB application to have a browse dialog to point to an excel file of my choice to be the datasource ?
And is Crystal Report XI .Net compatible ? I read that R2 was .Net compatible.
Is my version compatible ? if not what am i missing out on ?
I really want to know the answer to these few questions, because i have no idea where else i can find the answer for,
Thanks !

In a word, No.
And, this will explain why. Scroll down just a bit and you will see the "Crystal Reports XI" section. Read through that.

Re: Set datasource from VB through dialog
If you purchased a separate copy of Crystal XI as you say you have, then you may be able to download the XI R2 from their web site and install. Its available, just check the licensing restriction. I think the licensing may restrict it to a Developer Edition or better. Which edition of XI did you pruchase? The XI R2 will update the VS 2005 components to be the full XI compatible. You could then use your VS2005 to create an application to do the datasource switch at runtime.

Re: Set datasource from VB through dialog
Hi Ducky,
thanks i have the Professional version.
I actually managed to find R2 yesterday
http://www.businessobjects.com/produ..._release_2.asp
There seems to be a problem however.
Each time i try to run Crystal Reports, the windows installation thing comes...
the "Please wait while Windows configures crystal reports xi release 2"
then some dos screen from java.exe comes (locaed in CR's folder)
it does it a few times, and it stops after a while...
any idea what is going on ?
I did manage to have a report in vb, but i am not sure how i can change the datasource at runtime.... ?
thanks for any help

Re: Set datasource from VB through dialog
Did you uninstall the pro version before installing R2? Or did it ask you about it before letting you install? I seem to remember something about needing a clean install. Its been a while since I last installed XI R2.
The wait while it configures trouble you mention I've seem people complain about before. I believe if you search their support forums, there will be some answers there.
Business Objects has examples in their knowledgebase on how to change datasource too if you can't find it elsewhere.

Re: Set datasource from VB through dialog
Hi thanks,
It asked me about it, and i just choosed to 'upgrade'
i fixed the issue by unchecking the check for update at start up option...
I may have found the bug actually... it seems like the page does not exist in the install folder of BO...
Regardeless i did not find a real answer to 'fix' the issue
I have not managed to find examples for my question. I am not sure where their knowledgebase for vs 2005 + CR XI is
i would be glad to read on it if i had a link or something,
thanks
