Another reason why you should learn the Indian languages

    Well...

The recent racial abuse scandal that rocked the second test match between Australia and India shows why it is worthwhile to learn the nittigritties of the national language of India. I am actually surprised to see no threads on the topic here. Jethro, where are you mate? And all those others from down under?

Explain, if you will, why it is worthwhile to learn said nitty-gritties.

Er, we have to learn Hindi, so that we can understand the "mother related" abuse terms being thrown about by the Indian Cricketers? I am confused as to why we would want to do that?

Isn't the national language of India, English? Or do they have an Indian language as one of the national languages? Othewrise, there are several large dialects in India that can't understand each other.

India's official languages are Hindi and English, but they do have various regional dialects like you say.

IIRC, most educated Indians can speak English quite well and you'd expect the national Cricket team to be made up of educated people.

If they're going to make racial slurs towards the Ozzies, wouldn't it make sense to make them in English? There's no point in going through all the trouble of insulting someone if they can't understand that they've been insulted.

Eh, ain't that the point? Fun apart, I think when you are profoundly mad, and if any profanities escape out of your mouth without you thinking twice about it, they would more likely be in your native tongue than in a foreign language. Walking on the road if you happened to kick a block of concrete (accidentally), you are more likely to utter profanities in your native language. Try it out if you don't trust me

Eh, maybe they thought having an Indian language as their national language would be a tad better than a non-Indian language, they being Indian and all? Mighty interesting possibility there, don't you think?

Apart from the small irony Mendhak mentioned above, you need to understand that it is not a racial topic at all! That's what was decided by the hon'ble Judge Henson!

That's not racial abuse, though. If you're just muttering to yourself, then it doesn't matter what language you use and it's not any kind of international incident. However, if you're specifically saying things to other people in order to provoke or abuse them then you need to communicate that to them clearly in a language that they can understand.

Anything less is an act of cowardice.

It depends. Simultaneous multilinguals can 'think' in multiple languages — the profanity is most likely to come from whichever is their primary language at the time. Those who've learnt languages in their teens or as adults are unlikely to develop this ability.

That is a special case, though, since effectively you have more than one 'native' language.
