I'm working on an ICQ style app coded in VB it sends messages to others but it needs a whole lot of polishing and I want it to send files, I'm fine working on it but I thought it might be fun to share the project. If anyone wants to work with me on this drop me a line, there is no money in this stuff but hey its kind of fun.

as someone older......
may i suggest u ask shawn fanning (napster creator) what language he used for napster, because using VB for that kind of thing aint a good idea as code gets big, sloppy and slow! may i suggest u use C or ASM or even DELPHI, but not VB! just advice, no offense!

Yeah I hear ya
Yeah good suggestion, for sure VB is certainly not the best language for this one, C++ would be a whole lot better but I started this project a long time ago. I may run it through a code converter sometime this summer but for now its VB.
As for questions about how it check if users are online I use a central server that contains text files with contact lists, every client program calls the server according to a timer to check the status of a user.

Why not use a database as opposed to text files so when peope login thay set a boolean value to true and do a sql search to check who is online.
Just a suggestion.

Are there programs that can convert VB code to C++ code?

Would writing it in VB and converting it to VB.NET be a way around converting it from VB to C++ ?
As I have read VB.NET will be as fast as C++ anyway?

Its ridiculasly expensive. 1k for a piece of software eek:
Then again, i suppose that it is quite a powerful piece of software and its aimed at big companies.
And its not even finished, there is a list of objects they hav't implemented yet:

bob323:
ive alerady made an app like the one ur making. i made it a few weeks ago (its probably been months), when school was still goin.
i made it for a school network, so they can send stuff, like project files they all could use. it was kinda useful since the kids didnt use up andwidth for checking their email as they could send it across my prgrm (which also works on the net - was talking to some1 in the states the other day)
anyway, if u want to c the prgrm or want some hlpe, mail me:
