What about this??
There is a new user who has the screen name p@u. I had earlier moaned about people behaving mischieviously (this is a mild word, though!) and this where we are heading. Could I have some feedback on whether such screen names should be allowed and if yes, on what criteria?
Thanks if I receive feedback. No thanks if nobody reads this.

I can't see any problem whatsoever with that word...I don't even know if it is a word

OK, basically, Honeybee thinks that the username "p@u" is somehow obscene. I think it's because they see "P@U" to be "pee at you"...
WHY?!
You're taking it too far. As ChimpFace9000 said, your avatar objection was fine, but you are now just looking for things to complain about.
Chill out !
Sorry if this post seems a bit hard, but please - just don't be so critical, and be a bit more lenient before you go posting about things in Forum Feedback.

Excuse me, I am a he, and not a she. Also I would be grateful if you could describe another way of pronouncing that string.
I don't understand how you cannot be offended when you see 'pee at you' on the screen. At least I am offended. But as usual, I am going to be the only one who talks about getting offended, and perhaps poor John will introduce one more option in the user settings:

I understand you might be offended, but please fill me in on something: What is offending about it? Is it that fact that the name is trying to imply that he/she is going to "pee" on you?
This may sound stupid, but please fill me in, as I have no clue as to what is so offending.

p@u
Could refer to peachu, { especially since @ = at, and when a 'u' follows a 't' in some words it sounds out as 'chu', ie: 'rapture', 'picture', 'torture', 'mature', 'texture', 'actually', 'capture', and so on...}
which is a kind of a pug dog.

I apologise - slip of the typing - however you don't get many males calling themselves, "Honeybee" do you?!
Could you please explain what you meant when you said, I would be grateful if you could describe another way of pronouncing that string. I'm not quite sure what you were getting at.
Anyhow, yes, it seems as though you are the only one offended... it's just a joke.

Yes.... That was sarcasim, and its not to be taken seriously, do you really expect this guy to pee on you .....no is that...well wheres the offence then?
or another thing....are you genrally an attention seeker? as this might be just another stunt

By the way:
I'm perplexed by people taking offense that other
people have a presumption on the gender of their user
name. Especially one like "HoneyBee". If one refers to a
username as "Him", "Her", "She", He", or "it", solely
based on the chosen username, it is surely not a
presumption of the gender of the real individual behind
the username. After all, a username is meant to be only
a representative of the self, a string version of an
avatar, NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS REALITY!

Well ...
Chenko, I am not an attention seeker. I just wanted to express my feelings here because I think a place like the discussion forums should be a welcome place, not a forbidden one. As for the attention part, I shall get it if I deserve it, and not by stunts like this.
Parksie, I have been using the net for more than 10 months now. And I have seen porn sites which at least display a banner saying if you are under 18, you should not enter the site. Even they care about offensive things, even if it is just for the sake of legal formalities. I just think people should be more respectful in places like this.
NotLKH, I don't think the explanation given by you holds good. I do not know where you hail from, so I cannot assess your knowledge of English. From my knowledge, a word like capture has the letters a, p and t appearing in that sequence, while the username in question would only have a and t, without any letters between them. In a language where go and do are pronounced differently, the example given by you is out of place. Also if the member needed a name with an at in it, he/she would have selected patu.
As for the question of whether I am afraid this member would actually p @ me, I think the question itself is quite stupid. I am not asking you to help me because this member is going to pee at me, but merely stating that this kind of a screen name does not go with the kind of reputation this forum has.
To NotLKH again, I did not take offense at being addressed as a she, I was merely correcting the mistake. I have myself made such mistakes in the past and I perfectly understand that the screen name does not necessarily reflect a member's gender.
Xenonic_Rob, you don't have to apologize, as I said earlier the slip is easy to make and not intentional. When you see [email protected], it is pronounced as 'Bill At Hotmail Dot Com'. The username in question is pronounced just as that, 'pee at you'.
Megatron, of course the question is stupid, but I understand your intention of asking it. What bothers me is every time I see this member in any post, I feel like he/she is telling me whatever is in the screen name. If someone kept telling you that, wouldn't you get offended?
All this while, no one has thought about all the other screen names? Has anyone thought why only this name offends me? What about names like Megatron, Kedaman, parksie, honeybee, chenko, jeff_1 and 17000 odd others on the forums? Why in the world should someone choose a name like 'p@u' when there are virtually infinite permutations and combinations of the 26 alphabets, 10 digits and an underscore possible??
I apologize to all the users mentioned in the earlier paragraph, I was just trying to prove my point. I have no intention of dragging you into this issue, nor am I suggesting that your screen names are offending. The point is just that when you can choose any damn harmless screen name, why should you pick one that is 'p@u' ??

Somehow I thought so...I've been using the net for nearly 6 years now, and after a while you get slightly more thick-skinned. Just try not to let it get to you

The first thing I thought when i saw this was: oh, his name's probably Paul or something.
Then I wondered if honeybee was getting upset because a non alphanumeric character was used, or perhaps because it was a link to a non-existent email address. Again, no.
It took me quite a few minutes, and a good bit of reading around to realise quite what honeybee was getting offended by. Oh well, if you want to go looking for things to offend you, fine. I'd far prefer it if people weren't upset, but that's freedom for you...
