How Many Members Wear Glasses
I just started wearing glasses and it has got me wondering, just how many programmers out there wear them? Its a common stereotype, but I always assumed it to be way off the mark.
I wonder just how many do wear them....

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I have a slight astigmatism in my right eye which bothers me at distances over about three metres, however my left eye is fine.
I should wear glasses for things like lectures, but since covering my right eye and squinting through my left fixes my vision entirely, I haven't bothered getting them.

Maybe I should have put
"Should wear them but don't"
on the poll...

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
Some people here wear contacts and use it as an excuse not to stay out beyond 11pm.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I wear contacts (which counts as wearing glasses), but I find contacts better because I can use it as an excuse to get rid of unpleasant company after 11PM.
Oh and I'm almost blind.

I wear glasses. Without them on, I can read small text that is 7 inches from my face, further than that and it is too blurry to read.

I wore glasses years ago, but I switched to contacts. My eyes change too much to have glasses.
For those who have contact lenses, what is your prescription number? Mine's -4.5.

I don't, but should for reading in poor light. The small print on some curry tins is beyond me - made worse because it's usually 1 point dark orange print on a purple background. Peripheral vision (nearly 180 degrees) and long sight is good - I can easily make out 2mm thick twigs on trees over 50 feet away. My eyes are over 55 years old. My liver's still good . I expect things to go downhill from here

I do, but I'm thinking of getting contacts. But they seem to be such a pain in the ass to put on/take out.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
Well I didn't think I needed glasses. I only went to the opticians because I was getting headaches when I was reading. I thought if the worst came to the worst I would get them from reading only.
I'd always assumed I could see everything as clearly as everyone else, but now I have glasses to wear constantly.

I've never worn them. At some point I will, but hopefully not for another ten to fifteen years. My vision used to be excellent, now it's just better than average.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
Fact:
95% of contact lens wearers will experience the lenses sliding around into their skull and severing both optic nerves at the same time. This leads to rapid explosive internal bleeding causing their heads to explode. This also causes severe shrapnel injury to anyone within 25 feet of the myopic narcissist. The optical orbs in question will be jettisoned to safety at the time of detonation.
Unless you have a new Donor Opt-Out card from the NHS, in which case your skull and close friends will be safe... for now.

What's smoking gotta do with eye sight? I still have 20-20 vision after smoking for about 4 years now.

What doesn't smoking have to do with eyesight.. all over Australian smoke packets are pictures of peoples blind eyes, gangreen-looking feet, yellow fingers, dead babies.. etc. To deter people from smoking..
The picture on my current deck is a brain cut in half with a blood clot dripping out of it.. I'll take a picture when I get home..

I don't wear glasses (just normal glasses for protection against UV Rays). Although I can say that my eyesight has deteriorated a bit but I can still see fine so no need.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I wear glasses because I haven't had the money to get an eye exam and get an updated contact prescription. Once I really start rolling in the spare cash, I'm hoping to get LASIK... kick the problem altogether... I can't stand glasses. It looks too smart. It's not me.

Re: How Many Members Wear Glasses
I started wearing one contact (for my right eye) when I was 15 or 16.
But I stopped wearing it, for about 3-4 months now. I should be going to the oculist, but I can't find the time to do that, so I just keep walking around without contants. It only gives me a bit of a problem when it's dark and raining.

It's not a wrong stereotype. Frequent viewing of video screens (in combination with eye genes) causes people to develop bad vision.
So recently, a lot of people, but especially programmers need corrective lenses. I think the number of people in the U.S. that uses corrective lenses is as high as 1/3.
