Who uses Sharepoint and for what??

We were thinking we could use Sharepoint to allow outside people to access (via some un/pw) a page in Sharepoint.

    Anyone using Sharepoint?

Anyone pushing stuff to Sharepoint (from vb6 or .net)?

Has anyone dealt with lots (I mean thousands) of users getting into Sharepoint remotely??

I was about to post this question again - then I thought to myself - didn't I already ask this question??

Well - this is a bump - better then a duplicate thread.

Is Sharepoint really not used by anyone here??

Should I post a poll in CC to find out

Stuff it in CC and you'll never get any serious answers.
We're starting to use it. Mostly for collaboration and document organization. If I need a document from QA, then I can pop over to the QA page and grab it from there. No longer need to care about what server it's on and if I've got the right share point. As of yet, all pushings to it are done by adding web parts to it by hand. Eventually we want to dump our in house, home-grown time/resource/project management system and integrate SP with Project and start using that. Then at least we'd be able to share project plans and timelines with out clients alot easier.

So far we're not doing anything programatically with SP and VB.... yet... I see that coming.

    Document organization.

Sharepoint has just been launched in pilot mode at my client's shop, and our department manager has volunteered us to be a part of the pilot. We have 8 and a half tons of Excel Spreadsheets strewn all over our LAN going back several years. As these spreadsheets contain potentially auditable information, we have to keep them, and it looks like Sharepoint will be a reasonably easy way to do that as well as keep them organized.

Do you push anything to it programatically yet?

Yeah - that's where we are headed - automation of PDF delivery - stuff like that.

We're looking at the same deal here too.... I'm kind of excited about it. Our Business Analysts have been making the most use of it so far.... but they steeped in the documentation more than any one else. One of the neat things done recently was to the main portal page, we added industry news feeds so we can see whats going on out in the utility industry -- I suspect that on the developer's home page, we'll run the MSDN news feed.

There's also been talk about having a page for our customers to loginto and submit bugs.

This is an excellent idea. How much talk has there been? Any ideas on how you would implment a page like this?

We are looking at two areas. An in-house page where users can get at database info but from a web-page like - display only...

Then another page where outside users log in and get to PDF's about info specific to them.

Do you all have development sharepoint installs? Should I be installing sharepoint on my dev servers at my office or can I just dev on the install at my customer site itself?

I would put it on the dev servers for testing, and their the client site once everything was working the way I wanted it to.
