i tried it and didn't see anything new to it that myspace didn't already offer. Annoyingly one of my best friends who doesn't live nearby has dumped myspace in favor of facebook.

I used facebook back when it was college exclusive. At that point, it was nothing but bio fields, pictures, and groups. Much cleaner, and it did its' job well. I haven't used it since I was kicked out for not doing any work...

Social network sites are a means of self validation. The attention that one gains through the use of such websites contributes towards a self-esteem not as small as it used to be. The owners of the websites, though, gain loads of metadata about 'customers' which can be used in many ways in the future.

Correct, that's why I use it. If someone takes more than 1 day to accept my friend request, I send notes threatening to kill myself if they don't. That strategy hasn't failed me yet.

Facebook will go out of business as all the negative feedback from the tracking and auditing it does on its members. Privacy issues always will kill a site/app.

Actually it explains why its gotten so much more notice and why the creator is being hammered on improving the revenue generating business model for it. The creator was just on 60 minutes last night and he made the site seem like its not making any money and that users are displeased with it because of its tracking stuff and advertising gimmics

facebook used to be the clean and simple version of myspace.

...but then came 3rd party apps.

Look at ANY other application out there in a "standard" configuration. Then compare it to itself loaded with a gazillion 3'rd party plug-ins.

I wrote a facebook clone system just now on my private server. It's fantastic. In fact it's so good I'm not going to let anyone else at all use it.

Facebook is another one of those temporary hypes. It will go out of business, but not because of privacy issues. Individuals are willing to sacrifice privacy in return for an incentive.

When the novelty wears off people soon start taking notice of the privacy / ethical issues. Let's face it, not many businesses are ethical
