Suggestions for a new Work Laptop
I just got a new job , and my boss told me to buy whatever I think I need in order to setup my home office. So I was thinking and I going to need a new laptop but I looking for some suggestions.
I don't want to spend more than $1500-$2000 for it but I want it to have a large hard drive with at least 2 gigs of RAM. OS - XP Professional or Vista Ultimate.
So does anyone have any suggestions?
Regards,
Mark

Re: Suggestions for a new Work Laptop
2 gigs will be plenty if you stick with xp professional. If you want to get taht much money involved, i suggest you get a laptop in the $1000 range with a docking station that has usb plugs and a monitor hook-up. That way whenever you have the laptop at home, you have a huge flatscreen to look at and a real mouse to use. But you can still take the laptop with you if you have to but don't have to actually unplug anything. Just take laptop off of dock.

Thank, one of my co workers has a ThinkPad T61. I really like the touch of the keyboard but they are a little pricey.

Stay away from Dell and purchase any extra warranty options.

Lenovo. It's my current work machine. Centrino Duo 2.0GHz with 3 gigs of ram and a pretty nice video card. 100 gig, 7200 rpm hard drive. Probably markets around $1700.

Compaq Mobileworkstatios are powerhorses...
I've got a two year old nw8240 - it runs SQL 2000, SQL 2005 - VS all the versions
It's a great machine.
The 8510 starts at $1439
The 8710 starts at $2349

Actually - the 8710w certainly looks like a great machine

The only problem with the Lenovo laptops is that the largest HD is 160gb otherwise is is a nice machine.

And what's stopping you from getting an aftermarket HD for it? Lenovo laptops have great engineering. Replacing parts is pretty easy.

I'm on an HP right now... after two years, the screen is getting flaky... and not worth getting fixed anymore. Thank goodness for secondary screens...

I also agree that avoiding dell is a must. We buy them at work and they are awful. The screens were clearly contracted out to the lowest bidder. The screen appears to shimmer slightly and has a grainy look to it. Looking at text on it for long periods of time will cause you to have a migraine. They also have horrible backlighting that causes the bottom of the screen to be 2 to 3 times as bright as the top of the top of the screen. I am not sure of the extent of this issue accross dell laptops though. The ones that we have bought that have this problem are the Latitude D620s and the Latitude D830s.
If you don't believe me, search 'dell grainy screen' on google and see what comes up. Also, some people "can't" see the problem because they old and blind.

Re: Suggestions for a new Work Laptop
if you buy a laptop under $500 you should expect shoddy parts. And that's about what the dells are worth.

If you come to the UK to purchase it, you won't be able to spend less than £1000.
