Longest time you spent away from programming?
For a good I'd say two years I got very into programming, and I felt like I was pretty sufficient at doing anything asked of me. Since then, its been two years off with no regrets. Anyone else have breaks and go back or never return?

18 years, I was programming inside the womb then gave that up for breathing.

Re: Longest time you spent away from programming?
1 year since I started programming First Year University...
I felt it was time to get back. I was not happy with the other function assigned to me. Although that did improve a lot of some interpersonal and communication skill... so no regrets...
so now stumbling back to programming since i should be able to technically guide my newbies into completion of the project.

Re: Longest time you spent away from programming?
I have not been programming for about 18 months now. This new job is "killing" my VB knowledge.

I sneezed once, so I ended up spending 0.521 seconds of my time away from programming.

Re: Longest time you spent away from programming?
I left my server on over Christmas and SSH'd into it while Dad was carving the turkey. My laptop is now covered in gravy and there's a bunch of those tiny broccoli bits between the keys. Dinner plates are for n00bs.
I don't live here any more.

Re: Longest time you spent away from programming?
I do go wandering around for a month or so every now and then, and the computer is currently too heavy/valuable to take on such trips. I've considered it, though. Perhaps with a solar charging system.

Re: Longest time you spent away from programming?
December 1999 to August 2006, while I was a "stay-at-home-mom" raising my two daugters (born Jan 99 and Sept 01. I went back to work 6 weeks after Kimberly was born, and got more depressed as she got older...)
Prior to that, I worked from June 1984 after graduation to Jan 1999.
It was awesome being home with them!!!
It was equally as awesome working again. I love programming!!!

Not yet, but in 1st and 3rd grade I am impressed with their exposure to computers in the school system! My older daughter gets to use and take home a laptop starting next year. I don't even have a laptop! (Well, okay, a company I consult for gave me one so I didn't have to VPN into their network anymore, but I don't feel right using it unless it's for their projects).

Re: Longest time you spent away from programming?
I was exposed to computers when I was a kid too, but I stopped when I saw that they didn't have any webcams.

You are fortunate that it wasn't a very long time.
I had to go to the bath room once and that consumed nearly 5 entire minutes.
It was horrible.
