Photography Contest - And the winners are...

No prizes! Just the ego-boosting glory of having your photo chosen as the best!
    Rules/Instructions:
    • Add links (see post #13) for up to 5 photographs
    • Include a short, optional, description of each
    • The contest will close when 100 photographs have been received or 9:00 PM PST (GMT -8), December 23rd, 2008 whichever comes first
    • I will upload the photographs as they are available to an account that I have on ImageEvent
    • On Jan 1st or when there are 100 photos I will provide a link to the photos and add a poll to this thread so that people can vote for their favorite. And BTW, I won't allow voting for yourself

My sister is a photographer. Is it okay if I use her photos or ask her to post them?

I probably couldn't tell but I'd like to limit it to non-professional-photographer VBF members.

She isn't actually a photographer as a job or anything. It's just a hobby of hers. She's only 18. She has taken some classes though.

    Hi Martin!

Here are my entries. I'm not a professional photographer however I do enjoy taking pictures when I do get a chance.

Camera used is Nikon Coolpix S4.
No editing has been done on the pictures.

DSCN4060.JPG - Picture of an OLD tree from a railing fronting the Municipal Hall of Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental Province in the Philippines at dusk.

DSCN4393.JPG - Picture of the boulevard of Dumaguete City at night. The stretch covers the entire City coast. A very small City. Towards the other end, you can see the port.

DSCN4418.JPG - Picture of the busy coast of Dumaguete City in the dawn.

DSCN6328.JPG - Modern Art called "chalice" found in the Cathedral Square in New Zealand.

DSCN6521.JPG - I don't know what this bird is called, but this picture is taken on a hill in New Zealand.

Fromethius... I think it's best if we stick to pictures that we've taken, it's a tiny showcase of our own talent or lack thereof.

Martin, any size limits? Do you accept panorama shots too?

    Re: Photography Contest

If you want us to fit 5 photos into a zip file and expect them to be 500kb or less then we'll have to make them all 256 color and shrink them down to the size of icons.

Nobody is going to want to scale down their masterpieces because then they look crummy, and my photos are bad enough before I've shrunk them.

VB's upload rules are no good for this type of contest. Maybe one of the mods (or a generous member) could setup a FTP server for the duration of this contest?

As I said I use ImageEvent. There are no size limits or formant restrictions that I know of.

With an apology to wossname that's true. So I guess someone will have to find a place that will host them where I can copy them, or we could try having them sent to me in an email. PM me for my email address if you want to try it that way.

Alright, then use ImageShack or Flickr to host the images, post the links here as your entry. Is that good enough?

Yes, they'll give you a link, you will click on the "All Sizes" link just above the image, and you can then save those images to your own hard drive.

Look at this random example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lesec/170423167/

It doesn't matter. They will all be shown the same size. I looked at yours and they don't lose any noticible resolution when expanded to the size I'm going to show them at.

They're bigger than the size I usually use (800px max dimension). I hope that's not considered too small.

    They'll be fine...

But why would you use a size so small? You can always take them at large dimensions and then resize them for when you want to share them with friends or post them somewhere. At least you have the larger sized images as a 'raw' ready to be manipulated again and again.

I was using that size earlier, but when I look at those images now, my neck clenches in pangs of regret.

    Re: Photography Contest

I do take them at 'large dimensions' (not that I have a choice in that matter). I just resize them to 800 pixels since that's what most forums stipulate as a maximum dimension. I assume that 10 megapixel RAW files are of little use to anyone.

There are several choices at ImageEvent and I've chosen "large" which is 800x600 (depending on orientation) as the default, but the viewer can change that to "Small" 320x240, "Medium" 576x432, "x-Large" 1024x768 or "Original".

    Thanks Marty for the invitation.

I wish I had a 'real' digital camera. Here are some pics taken with my Nokia 5300 Cameraphone (1.3 Mega Pixels). Hope you don't dislike them.

Editing done: Croped/Resized and/or adjusted saturation

    1. Buddhist Wall-hangings
Description: Taken indoor. Very poor lighting condition. Nightmode OFF.

    2. Low Light
Description: That 0-watt lamp was the only source of light. Nightmode OFF.

    3. Sunset

    4. Macro with magnifying glass
Description: One advantage of cameraphone is, they are good for casual macro photography (If you get the focus correctly).

    5. Birdie
Description: Another advantage of cameraphone - I was able to fit the tiny lens inside a gap in the net.
