What do you code?
Hey
Just out of curiosity, most of you seem pretty experienced programmers here, so what / why do you code? Isit how you earn a living or just a hobby?
If it's just a hobby then what type of programs do you make? I think it'd be interesting to see.
Thanks

Re: What do you code?
For some of us, it's both.... I generally don't do types of programing most consider "hobby" ... as I do business type of applications. I would probably still do it even if I didn't get paid for it (as long as there was another source of income to support the family)....

Re: What do you code?
At the moment, definitely a project for business purposes only. Using C#.
My job's R&D, though, so I do potentially anything.

Job: Databases and front-ends for databases.
Hobby: Robots, AI, learning systems, EA, network distributed apps, etc. (those are all aspects of the same thing).

Re: What do you code?
Well just turned 18 and still awaiting university feedback and such.
What i am doing at the moment is working on a huge library in C# for a game client. And then just messing about with little things like working on an efficient way for coloring keywords in a text box. I tried using an ArrayList, Dictionary and HashTable just to see which worked best.
Thats all i am doing at the moment whilst i still hopelessly look for a company that will take me under their wing even for free! Just to learn a little more and see how things run.

At the moment Im working on a network application that'll simplify the sending of files between 2 computers...more specifically between another VBF members (who...? ) and my computer.

All work related (my hobbies have little to do with computers at all).
All database work using VB6/VB.NET and SQL.

Re: What do you code?
I code business apps and automate/modify other applications in both VB.NET, VB 6, Office apps (Outlook, Excel), Access and SQL Server databases. I taught myself programming over the years and also learned allot from this site from other members and from me helping other members with their issues.

7 AM - 8 PM = Work stuff
10 PM - 2 AM = Personal stuff
Mostly, the projects I do, are to make my life easier ( because I'm quite lazy ); and that itself is bridging several technologies in the process.

Re: What do you code?
Business related - student information systems, financial information systems
Being large enterprise apps makes integration a key part - we do VB (6 and .Net) and MS SQL - but have to talk to dozens of outside app's - other DB's (Pervasive, etc)
Use new hardware - pocket pc's - cameras...
R&D is where it's at

Re: What do you code?
I work in a more open environment.
My main job is working with Lotus Domino to create and manage portals/Information Management systems for Queen's University. My work tends to get me involved with video streaming, javascript, html, xml, java, LotusScript, as well as a few other little programs when I have some free time.
I also program as a hobby, but since I work full time now, my other hobbies have been taking up more of my time.
