Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
Good morning to all.
I have a question about purchasing used copies on ebay.
If I purchase a used copy with all the box, keycodes, disks in excellent shape, blah..blah...blah...,
Will the product still function the same, when I go to use the keycodes, register, etc....
Or will I have issues with a previous owner, previous used keycodes, etc...????
Thanks all for time in responding.==

Re: Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
In theory that should be OK.. but note that legally, what you listed isn't enough - you need to have the licence agreement too (which comes on a piece of paper with a title like "End User Licence Agreement - Number of licences: 1").

Re: Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
Another question related to your response.
With many of these software packages, the license agreement is done online, and does not come w/a piece of paper (like my Windows XP install and my MS Office2003). If this is the case, and the user went in to "activate" the software and agreed to the license agreement online, then it is unlikely they have an actual piece of paper, and the license agreement was activated online. How will this impact the use of the program when I load it onto my machine?
Will it allow me to then do the same and activate under a new agreement? or will it refuse and not function properly?
And if I do get this agreement hardcopy, what does it mean to the function of the program?
I'm not trying to scirt legal stuff here, just want to make sure if I pay for something, it will work, but a used version of VB6.0 Enterprise Ed. running $400-$500 is much more affordable than a new box version running $1000.
I really appreciate your time. Thanks. It is much help to me.

Re: Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
I have Visual Basic 6 Professional Version. I bought my copy of ebay. I have installed it several times from replacing hard drives etc, and have never had a problem. My copy of VB does not require activation, just install and start writing code.

Re: Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
With some installations of VB6, depending on the distro you have, activation is not necessary, but in answering your questions regarding registration, if the program was registered online with Microsoft then there should be the capability to transfer the license over from one person to another, I know this can be done for Windows. If you can't register it online for some reason try registering it over the phone, Microsoft uses a phone-based registration system for a lot of its products, and it doesn't care about pre-registered editions, generally if you call the number between 11pm and 6am EST (GMT + 10) then the callcentre isn't manned and so the program should just present you with an activation code. Even though I say this legally you need to make sure that the transfer is legal and not in breach of the EULA. If in doubt just call up the Microsoft call center in your country and they will help you, they should be able to register the application under your name, however you also have to bare in mind the legalities of buying the CD on eBay or from someone directly, because your not buying it from Microsoft and the person (and eBay just so were clear) isn't an authorized reseller of Microsoft products and so they may not have the legal right to sell you their copy of VB6. Hope some of this ranting and raving was of help.

Re: Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
First you need to verify that your copy of VB 6 is not pirated. You can call MS and provide the serial registration number for verification too. I dont know of any version of VB that doesnt come with a EULA certificate or the official sticker on the box "Certificate of Authenticity". MS provides examples of how to validate these on its site.

Please allow me one remaining questions.
How much difference is there between Visual Basic 6.0 Professional and Visual Basic 6.0 Enterprise Edition?
Thanks

Re: Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
I don't believe you can compile EXE files with the academic version and it is limited in its functionality.

Re: Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
Yes, the academic version is a trimmed down version from the view of your provious question. Plus, no compiling of executables and licensing restrictions about producing commercial apps and use by non-academic persons. Bottom line is that you can only use it in school.

Re: Visual Basic 6.0 Purchase
On another note, VB.NET 2005 (and soon 2008) Express versions are free.
