By using this forum and by using VB... aren't we making ourselves work harder and poorer and making BillyBoy Richer and Richer...? Think about it. What do YOU think?

well, if you're looking for the serious answer...this forum and MS's products(ie VB and VC++) have made my programming experience so much easier. And, some will disagree with me, but I think Bill Gates has earned almost every penny he has and he deserves it...

Hey ... "He Deserves it????"
What on Earth do you mean? Did you know Bill Gates literally STOLE the Windows Opearating System from Apple without giving them anything? Literally all his fortunes is from the things he has stolen from others...
"He deserves it... Phew.... I totally disagree"
Haven't you seen the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley"

yup. Just watched it in fact...
Look at what MS did with Windows, pretty great things, lots of bugs sure, but it can be tolerated.
I think Mac sucks, and that's basically the Apple version of Windows, right, or vice-versa...
If you can steal something, and get away with it, its not wrong in my book

I agree, he is a brilliant man. I mean some people profit off the ignorance and stupidity of others, but nothing like he did...He got Apple to show him their code, IBM to buy an OS that he didn't have, and the guy who had the OS to sell it to him. That takes one smart mo-fo

For People who think Apple is the Inventor of GUI OS
You are Wrong..
XEROX were the guys who actually Invented the GUI OS.. Poor Fellows they failed to patent it. Apple just copied that and in turn was copied by Microsoft.

Mac OS is designed to be simpler than Windows.... It is not a terrible OS.. People who say that they thought that is was crap, just don't know how to use it... Also it is designed for Designers not really for programmers.
Though I also do see you r point that 8.6 is crap.. OSX is much better.. I have been beta testing it for a few months....

As for Bill buying DOS...fair enough -- he was only young! And anyway, people shouldn't be jealous because someone's made f**kloads of money. I don't really care HOW he got it...I just care that I don't have it

Do you think that Billy boy get 5 dollars each time you get an illegal operation on your screen et 10 dollars each time you have a blue screen and this is why he is rich???
Another thing: MacOS is base on UNIX... So, don't like Macs = don't like UNIX...

MacOS is based on Unix? Hmm...didn't know that. Anyway, the Unix we know and love is that that was developed in the 70s and keeps getting better MacOS, on the other hand, may be a good OS, but it's an appalling interface. I could never use anything that doesn't have a command line

Yes but because it is UNIX based.. It is much more stable than M$ (especially Win 95).. But MacOS is also flawed in its simplicity and many PC users try to do complicated things that can be done with a PC and find that they cannot be done on a Mac.. That is why I am happy that I own both and use both on a regular basis!

What you have to bear in mind is that Bill Gates started off like one of us. And now he's rich.
How it got his wealth is irrelevant, the fact remains that he has it. And he should be respected for that.
But - is he happy?........

Use
writing software in C++ is like driving rivets into steel beam with a toothpick.
writing haskell makes your life easier:
reverse (p (6*9)) where p x|x==0=""|True=chr (48+z): p y where (y,z)=divMod x 13
To throw away OOP for low level languages is myopia, to keep OOP is hyperopia. To throw away OOP for a high level language is insight.

No choice
I would suspect (as is the case for myself) that we were employed on the basis that we will (and can) work with MS products. Not many developers have a choice what language they use in a given product.
We could all refuse to use Windows or any other MS product but most of us would be out of a job before long.
I don't think Bill Gates should be resented for how rich he is (or though it does raise the philisophical question: should anyone have that much money?) but what does worry me is the power he has over the PC software market.
There is a natural conergence in software that has arrisen due to the need for compatability and interoperability. Microsoft have come out on top and have most of the cards in their hand. They would have to write incredibly bad software to be rejected by the masses (currently they've only managed moderately bad).
Everything I say is either loose interpretation of dubious facts or idle speculation rooted in irrational sentiment.

yeah I saw it. I also know the real stories and know that about 80% of the movie was a huge exaggeration and some of it was not factual at all. If you get your facts from a movie, well...I feel for you.
The world revolves on taking ideas and pushing them further. Is every company that makes PC's a bunch of thieves since Mac's where basically the first PC? No. I dont think so.

That's the whole point -its a consumer product like a fridge or a dishwasher - you are not supposed to "know how to use it" for general use - if you are then it has failed.

I think you'll find...
That even a fridge or dishwasher (which by the way, I don't know ho to use) requires a common knowledge of how fridges (or dishwashers) work.
You are also assuming that all fridges have the same means of of operating them, it's just the implementation that varies. Obviously this is not always the case.
My point being: You've got to know what the functionality is before you can even begin to intuitively work out how to 'unlock' the functionality.
Everything I say is either loose interpretation of dubious facts or idle speculation rooted in irrational sentiment.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about Gates wealth here. When we talk of tens of billions we are talking about the value of the equity he holds in the company that )he built himself. So this is not his pocket money - this is part of the market value of the company that he built and is using to dominate the industry.

Hmmmm... Another flaw in your statement? If you were writting open source for the Horiz Market... yes... true, you wouldn't make much money. However, if you were providing a service, by programming Linux X windows apps to businesses and organisations... Imagine how much you would be getting.
Many organisations are making the change to Linux... NEC the other day, announced all its servers + most desktops would become Linux based (about 20,000 in AUS, that's quite a few...) I think all other companies will start realising the benefits and move on to Linux... Don't you? Imagine the deman for Linux custom apps in 2 years time.
Mabye you stop using the word "idiot" every 3 seconds...?

But Bill didn't do it all himself, he copied other peoples source code and sold it. A bit like pirating games.
