In response to the reply you received from Steve Crawley

The WritePrivateProfileString is the means by which VB can create INI files. It is not a means of interrogating the registry nor is it a means of aquiring information regarding a Machines IP address

I have a collegue who is an API guru he should have code or at least information if what you want to do can be done in VB I will get back to you via this site tomorrow (or no later than the next day).

No You are right, but THATS Not what I said. WritePrivateProfileString can be used to write to the registry not just ini files I didn't suggest it would give details back (Please read the reply properly). This API can be used to update or write new. To read it id use GetPrivateProfileString.

    You can use things like:

Private Declare Function RegOpenKeyEx Lib "advapi32.dll" Alias "RegOpenKeyExA" (ByVal hKey As Long, ByVal lpSubKey As String, ByVal ulOptions As Long, ByVal samDesired As Long, phkResult As Long) As Long
Private Declare Function RegCloseKey Lib "advapi32.dll" (ByVal hKey As Long) As Long
Private Declare Function RegQueryValueEx Lib "advapi32.dll" Alias "RegQueryValueExA" (ByVal hKey As Long, ByVal lpValueName As String, ByVal lpReserved As Long, lpType As Long, lpData As Any, lpcbData As Any) As Long

and these work fine, but all your doing is introducing more API's.

    Hi Bill:

I stand corrected and it seems that the old saying is true, you learn something new every day.

By the way I have never used this API call to write to the registry. Do you have any sample code to demonstrate this:

    Thanks
