I have got tons of VB books BUT the one that helps and that I refer to the most are the MCSD Books on the VB exams.
They might be Exam test Books BUT they contain comprehensive details and examples on VB. They teach you what an MCSP/MCP should know so I guess you wont go wrong if you buy one.
Get one MCSD book that teaches the VB exams MCSD 175 and 176 (Desktop & Distributed Apps). It might cost more but I am sure you will get value for money.

Yeah, my favorite MCSD book is Visual Basic 6 Exams 70-175 and 70-176 by Howard Hawhee. I'm gonna go get the second exam taken care of in the next few weeks. Gotta wait for school exams to cool off first.

Hi Lethal,
I have got the same book. It is a good book and the binding doesnt wear out as easy as the rest.
Good luck on your 70-175. I am attempting both 175 and 176 in June....Mission Impossible... ???
Are you taking the 70-100 ? That is a Killer !!!

Yeah, I took 176 about a month ago. Was pretty easy. Distributed shouldn't be hard either. I've heard Analyzing Requirements and Defining Solutions Architectures is gonna be tough. Shi*, just typing all that out is tough... For my elective, I'm gonna probably take the SQL 7 exam. Good luck, just dont sweat it, it's not as bad as you think.

For those about to take MCSD exams as well
"Mastering Visual Basic 6". Covers just about everything.

That's your problem Lethal
Whinge, Whinge, Whinge....they are helpfully providing a book to get you going and your still whinging about it
Actually ya got a point:
How about
"Doing Visual Basic Objects"
"Dan Appleman's Guide to the Windows API" <- some one borrowed that one from the company library so ain't sure of the title, probably has VB in it somewhere.
You could also check out
"Visual Basic Programmers Journal" Although l would agree with Lethal on this one, (getting in before you Lethal), having to access the web site for just about every article is a painful way of doing things.
IF ya want to be very lame try
"Teach Yourself VB in 21 Days" or "Idiots Guide to VB" or "President Regan's Guide to VB".

Jethro, how could you take what I said and consider it "Whinge". I simply stated that I didn't like to consult a cd for every example in the book. Some of us like to read during long car rides or just sit on the couch and read. And I know your gonna say "That's what a laptop is for", but that is besides the point. I think it's kinda funny that you recommended an advanced topic, such as an API book to someone who is just starting off with VB. You gotta craw before you walk...Jethro

Well ...
Visual Basic 6.0 Programming Bible.
As the title says, it's the bible, covers everything.
I forgot the important info like the ISBN number, authors or the publishers, so I apologize for that.

Lethal Joke Dude
Wasn't too sure how advanced the guy was...if currently learning off web etc, probably has the basics down pat...hence 21 days would be lame.
The API book is good meaty stuff.

Myself, I'm building a library & have 15 different ones

- invoicing
- accounting
- stock management
- contacts management
- financial management
i am reading this book because covers a lot of how to build client/server apps in vb with ADO using SQL SERVER 7.
In my apps i only use access databases, but im thinking in changing to sql server, because its more powerfull.
Im looking for a book for learning vbscripsts and asp, but i cant find one that please me...

its just me, but i like the Dan Appleman books.
You have a complete book, and when you are in a hurry to find something, the entire book is in a searchable help file on the cd it comes with.

I've 2 VBScript books. Wrox VBScript and O'Reilly Learning VBScript.
For starting, the O'reilly one is great, lots of examples (& a CD) and is focused more on using vbscript with HTML pages, though it does have quite a bit on using vbscript files as standalone. I would definitly get this, but you will want another in a few months time as it is a little basic.
The Wrox one has only 1 good thing going for it and that's the lookup tables right at the back if you need information on a VBScript function. It's harder to understand / written professionly (which I find boring) and tries to cover everything - COM, VBScript, interaction with HTML, ASP but fails miserably as by trying to cover lots of areas, it doesn't go into each area enough and I felt anyone without knowledge of some of these other areas would come unstuck.
Sorry for waffling, set the O'reilly one, then look at an advanced one if needed at a later date.

He has books on everything, Even the win32 api as applied specifically to vb.
He's got a puzzle book or two out also. I think you learn the most from challenges.

I use a book with an identical title, but again since I don't remember the authors or the publishers, I am not sure if it's the same book.
What I have is quite good for database programming, but so far the Bible has been the most comprehensive one.

As a beginner, I like the book "Visual Basic 6, Black Book" by Steven Holzner. It has really simple. straight-forward examples of using the Intrinsic controls. Also goes through some examples of using DAO, ADO, API, and the Registry.

If you don't mind reading on the computer , check out http://www.psyon.org/archive/e-books...vb/index.shtml . They have 23 vb books include Dan Appleman's Visual Basic Programmers Guide to the Win 32 API . They also have some DB books.

I am a newbie to VB, but not to programming.
I found 21 days very tedious and lacking in examples.
I am anxious to try some of the books suggested.

I have a pretty good book in Hebrew that I occasionaly use to solve problems, if no help, going to the Visual Basic Programmer's Guide that came with VB, then moving on to Visual Basic Component Tools Guide (came with VB too) if that has anything to do with controls, then moving to Mastering Visual Basic (came with VB too. Duh!), then to here.
Summary:
Visual Basuc Programmer's Guide (Microsoft)
Visual Basic Component Tools Guide (Microsoft)
Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 (Hebrew) (Microsoft Press)
Mastering Visual Basic 5.0 (Microsoft)
But I don't think You'll cuont me from two reasons:
1. I'm rom Israel, so I don't know many English books
2. I use MS's books. LOL, Just kidding
Cheers,
Asaf Sagi
