Windows Media Player 10 has a nice tag editor that can be selected from a menu thet pops up at right click on the item currently playing and it also allows multiple selection / editing. However for some mp3 files it appears disabled (grayed). Anyone knows why?

No idea...are you sure the files aren't read only? (I know it's a dumb question, but just throwing it out there)
No read-only, I checked that first thing. But then I used 'Xilisoft Audio Converter' (http://www.xilisoft.com/audio-converter.html) to save the file with a lower sampling rate and this time I could edit the tags.

If that's the case then maybe you should upgrade to WMP 11, I'm sure it supports higher bit rates.

Oh well, I'm afraid my former post may have been somewhat confusing. WMP 10 does support higher rates, the only reason I saved the file with a lower rate is I want to avoid very large files, usually I settle for 128 which I find quite acceptable. For one single song it may not be worth it but when it comes to e.g. a complete opera it makes a big difference.
As for WMP 11 I upgraded some time ago but then found the tag editor had been removed so I decided to downgrade back to 10.

I'm don't quite recall the tag editor in 10, but I do know that there is one in 11. I've used it before and it does allow you to select multi tracks and edit their tags. I don't have it on my work PC (I still have WMP 9 here ) otherwise I would post a pic of the editor.

Well, I need to reassure myself about this, I remember it was a pain in the neck rolling back from 11 to 10 for whatever reason (maybe I had installed 11 over 9?) so I'll appreciate that picture if you can post it. But take your time.

I had a image, but my router keeps going down every time I upload it, so I deleted it
Did you try to save it as png or gif? They take a lot fewer bytes than bitmaps so for a small amount of colours as in screen dumps it really means a save.

The image below is a screen shot of the Advanced tag editor in WMP 11. You just have to right click on a song or group of songs and you will see the option.

OK thanks, I'll try again. For whatever reason it didn't work when I tried some time ago, perhaps I was kind of drowsy at the time.

Or probably it was a Beta version. This time it definately should have it.
Yes, it would make no sense to remove such a useful feature.

Now I've remembered what happened the first time. I right-clicked on the playing item and there was no "advanced tag editor" in the popup menu. You had (have!) to go to the library tab in order to have this option available. In version 10 it was also available in the "Now playing" tab.

Or maybe you just can't edit a song that is currently being played

Bad news: They don't have it in Now Playing
Good news: They have a link which will direct you straight to the song in the library so you can edit from there.

Yes, I noticed that link, it's the life-saving boat, otherwise I'd roll back to 10.
In version 10 you could actually edit a song that was playing.
